This is the last chapter of A1. We look back on the journey we have studied and learn words that connect sentences. Vocabulary: và, nhưng, nên, vì, ôn tập, luyện tập, tự tin, tiến bộ, tiếp tục, cố gắng, hoàn thành, kết thúc. Key grammar: sentence connectors. "và" (joins two similar things), "nhưng" (contrast), "nên" (result: [reason] nên [result]), "vì" (reason, placed before the reason like English "because"). A very Vietnamese paired structure: "Vì [reason] nên [result]". Note: don't confuse "nên" (so, therefore) with "vì" (because). English speakers often say "Tôi học nên tôi thích" (= I study so I like, reversed) when they mean "Tôi học vì tôi thích" (I study because I like) ✓. Tone corner: review all six tones.

Connecting sentences: và, nhưng, nên, vì
Explanation
Let's learn four sentence connectors. (1) "và" joins two similar things (addition): "Tôi học tiếng Việt và tiếng Nhật" (I study Vietnamese and Japanese). (2) "nhưng" states something opposite: "Tiếng Việt khó nhưng thú vị" (Vietnamese is hard but interesting). (3) "nên" states the RESULT, standing in the middle: "[reason] nên [result]": "Trời mưa nên tôi ở nhà" (rain → nên → stay home). (4) "vì" states the REASON, placed before the reason (like English "because"): "Tôi ở nhà vì trời mưa" (stay home ← vì → rain). Vietnamese often uses the pair "Vì [reason] nên [result]": "Vì tôi thích tiếng Việt nên tôi học mỗi ngày" (Because I like Vietnamese, I study every day). Important note: "nên" = "therefore" (result follows), "vì" = "because" (reason follows). English speakers often mix the two: they mean "Tôi học vì tôi thích" (I study because I like) but say "Tôi học nên tôi thích" (I study so I like — reversed meaning). To state a reason, use "vì".
