Asking politely: je voudrais, pourriez-vous
Explanation
In chapter 21 you learned « je veux + noun / infinitive » (je veux un café). It's correct, but very direct — in France, « je veux » can sound blunt, almost rude. To be polite, put the verb in the conditional: « vouloir » → « je voudrais », « aimer » → « j'aimerais ». « Je voudrais un café », « J'aimerais voir le musée ». To ask for a favour, use « pouvoir » in the conditional: « Pourriez-vous… ? » (with vous) or « Pourrais-tu… ? » (with tu): « Pourriez-vous m'indiquer la rue ? ». Add « s'il vous plaît » at the end and it's perfect. « Je voudrais » is built just like « je veux », only another form of the verb. Typical mistake: English speakers translate « I want » as « je veux » everywhere — « Je veux un café » ✗ (too direct). At a café or in the street, say « Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît » ✓.

In France, the heart of a town is not a shopping mall but the square and the café. You stroll on foot through the centre, sit down at a terrace, say « bonjour » when entering a shop. Understanding the square and everyday politeness helps you feel at home in any town.
The square and the terrace
Almost every town has a central square, often in front of the town hall or the church. Around it are cafés with terraces: tables and chairs outside, facing the street. You can sit there for an hour with a single coffee — that's normal, nobody rushes you. The terrace is the town's living room: you watch people go by, read, chat. The open-air market is often held on that same square, one or two mornings a week. If you're lost, ask for « la place » or « le centre »: from there you find everything.
Getting around on foot
In big cities you take the metro (in Paris, in Lyon) or the bus and tram everywhere. But the historic centre is best explored on foot: narrow streets, small shops, bakeries at every corner. Many centres are pedestrian-only, with no cars. So when you ask for directions, you're often told « it's very close, five minutes on foot ». Cycling is also very common: in many towns you rent a self-service bike to cross the centre.
« Bonjour » first
In France, politeness matters enormously, and it all starts with « bonjour ». When entering a shop, a café, or a lift, you say « bonjour, madame » or « bonjour, monsieur » BEFORE asking anything. Forgetting that « bonjour » and asking straight out can seem rude. When leaving, you say « merci, au revoir, bonne journée ». To ask, you add « s'il vous plaît » and choose the conditional: « Je voudrais… », « Pourriez-vous… ? ». With strangers and older people you use « vous », not « tu ». These little words — bonjour, merci, s'il vous plaît — cost nothing and open every door.
In short: in the French town, life is on the square and the terrace, and politeness is your best map. Say « bonjour » when you enter, « merci » when you leave, and ask with a « je voudrais » or a « pourriez-vous ? ». With those words, any town becomes more welcoming.
