Ich stehe immer früh aufI always get up early

How often do you do something? Vocabulary: immer, meistens, oft, manchmal, selten, nie, aufwachen, sich anziehen, frühstücken, das Frühstück, früh. Key grammar: frequency adverbs (immer, oft, manchmal, nie …) go AFTER the conjugated verb, not before it. Because the verb sits in position 2 (the golden rule from chapter 5), the adverb comes right after it: „Ich stehe immer früh auf.“ (I always get up early), „Sie frühstückt oft um acht.“, „Wir gehen manchmal spät ins Bett.“ English puts the adverb BEFORE the verb („I always get up“), so the English speaker says „Ich immer stehe auf“ ✗ → „Ich stehe immer auf“ ✓. Sound corner: „ie“ = long „ee“ (nie, wie) and the unstressed ending „-en“.

Frequency adverbs: after the verb

Explanation

To say HOW OFTEN you do something, you need frequency adverbs: immer (100%), meistens, oft, manchmal, selten, nie (0%). The position in the sentence is the key. Remember the golden rule from chapter 5: the conjugated verb sits in position 2. The frequency adverb comes right AFTER that verb (in the middle field), never before it: „Ich stehe immer früh auf.“, „Er frühstückt meistens um sieben.“, „Wir gehen manchmal spät ins Bett.“, „Sie trinkt nie Kaffee.“ With a separable verb, the adverb goes between the verb (position 2) and the prefix at the end: „Ich wache oft früh auf.“ The English speaker’s classic mistake: in English the adverb stands BEFORE the main verb („I always get up“, „She often eats“), so Mike transfers this order and says „Ich immer stehe auf“ ✗. That breaks the position-2 rule. The correct form is „Ich stehe immer auf“ ✓ — verb first, then the adverb.

Examples

  • Ich stehe immer früh auf.I always get up early.
  • Er frühstückt meistens um sieben. He usually has breakfast at seven.
  • Wir gehen manchmal spät ins Bett.We sometimes go to bed late.
  • Sie trinkt nie Kaffee. She never drinks coffee.
