Was machst du morgen? What are you doing tomorrow?

Making plans and inviting. Vocabulary: der Plan, morgen, heute Abend, das Wochenende, einladen, die Einladung, das Kino, das Café, treffen, zusammen. Key point: the verb is always in position 2. If the sentence starts with a time expression, verb and subject swap places — „Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin“ (Tomorrow I go to Berlin), „Heute Abend gehen wir ins Kino“ (Tonight we go to the cinema). English speakers keep subject-verb order: „Morgen ich fahre nach Berlin“ ✗ → „Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin“ ✓. Inviting: „Wollen wir ins Kino gehen?“ (Shall we go to the cinema?), „Hast du Lust?“ (Do you feel like it?), „Gern!“ (Gladly!) or „Tut mir leid, ich kann nicht“ (Sorry, I can't).

Verb in position 2: inversion after the time phrase

Explanation

The most important rule in a German main clause: the conjugated verb is always in second place. If the sentence starts normally with the subject, everything is easy: „Ich fahre morgen nach Berlin“ (I go to Berlin tomorrow). But if you put the time phrase first (for emphasis), the subject slips behind the verb — this is called inversion: „Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.“ The verb stays in place 2, subject and time phrase swap. The typical mistake: English speakers keep subject before verb and say „Morgen ich fahre …“ ✗. Correct: „Morgen fahre ich …“ ✓. Likewise: „Heute Abend gehen wir ins Kino“ (Tonight we go to the cinema), „Am Wochenende treffe ich Freunde“ (At the weekend I meet friends). You can invite with „Wollen wir …?“ + infinitive at the end: „Wollen wir ins Kino gehen?“ (Shall we go to the cinema?). You answer „Gern!“ (Gladly!) or „Tut mir leid, ich kann nicht“ (Sorry, I can't).

Examples

  • Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.Tomorrow I am going to Berlin.
  • Heute Abend gehen wir ins Kino.Tonight we are going to the cinema.
  • Wollen wir zusammen einen Kaffee trinken?Shall we have a coffee together?
  • Tut mir leid, am Wochenende kann ich nicht.Sorry, at the weekend I can't.
