Vietnamese · KNLTV Bậc 1 (A1) · Chapter 5

Bạn là người nước nào?What's your nationality?

Nationality and the question word "nào" (which) — it stays in place, it does not jump to the front. Negate a "là" sentence with "không phải": Tôi không phải là người Nhật (I'm not Japanese). And the first culture section: in Vietnamese, pronouns ARE the relationship — there is no neutral "you/I".

nào — "which" (in place)

Explanation

Like "gì", the question word "nào" (which) stays IN PLACE — it follows the noun it asks about and does not jump to the front. "Bạn là người nước nào?" follows the order of "Bạn là người nước [X]" — you just put [X] = nào. To answer, replace nào with the country name: Tôi là người Việt Nam.

Examples

  • Bạn là người nước nào?What country are you from?
  • Tôi là người Việt Nam.I'm Vietnamese.
  • Đây là nước nào?Which country is this?
  • Đó là Trung Quốc.That's China.

không phải (là) — negating "là"

Explanation

To negate an "S là N" sentence, do NOT use "không" alone before "là". Use "không phải": place it right before "là" (or before the noun). Tôi không phải là người Nhật = I am not Japanese. The "là" may be dropped: Tôi không phải người Nhật — same meaning. Note: with an ADJECTIVE you use plain "không" (Tôi không khỏe), but with a NOUN + là you must use "không phải".

Examples

  • Tôi không phải là người Nhật.I am not Japanese.
  • Đó không phải là bác sĩ.That is not a doctor.
  • Đây không phải là bạn tôi.This is not my friend.
  • Tom không phải người Trung Quốc. (bỏ "là")Tom is not Chinese. ("là" dropped)

Đại từ chính là quan hệPronouns are relationships

Vietnamese has no neutral "you" or "I". Every time you speak, you choose words that ENCODE the relationship — and they change with every person you talk to.

You pick by age and gender

To a man older than you: anh. An older woman: chị. A younger person: em. An uncle-aged man: chú. A very elderly person: ông (m) / bà (f). You use that very word for BOTH "you" and often "I" as well.

It flips per conversation

The same person can be your anh (he is older) while you are his em. With a third person you re-pick from scratch. There is no fixed "I": you are em to one person and anh/chị to another — in the same gathering.

"tôi" is neutral but cool

"tôi" ("I") is safe with strangers or in formal, distant situations. But using "tôi" with someone you should be calling anh/chị sounds cold — as if you are keeping them at arm's length. Among peers, "bạn" is friendlier.

Why people ask your age

This is why Vietnamese people often ask your age early: they CANNOT address you correctly until they know whether you are older or younger. It is practical, not nosy. The next chapter says more about this.

When unsure: with a clear peer, use "bạn"; with someone visibly older, use "anh/chị"; when truly unsure and you need to be formal, use "tôi" — then adjust once you know their age.

Ôn thanh điệu: thanh trên từ để hỏi— Tone Review: tone on question words

Keep the question word's own tone — don't let the question intonation drag it:

  • nàohuyền (falling)which — keep it low and falling
  • huyền (falling)what — also low and falling
  • đâungang (level)where (preview, ch14) — stays level

Same initial, different tone, completely different meaning:

  • nướcsắc (rising)country; water — this chapter
  • nửahỏi (dipping-rising)half

Read the question, keeping "nào" low and falling — don't push the pitch up at the end:
