Vietnamese · KNLTV Bậc 1 (A1) · Chapter 5

Bạn là người nước nào?

Người nước nào? —

  1. Nam Tom, bạn là người nước nào? Tom,
  2. Tom Tôi là người Mỹ. Và bạn?
  3. Nam Tôi là người Việt Nam.
  4. Tom À! Bạn của tôi là người Nhật.

  2. Tom Tôi không là người Nhật!
  3. Linh "Không phải"! Tôi không phải là người Nhật.
  4. Tom À! Tôi không phải là người Nhật. Tôi là người Mỹ.

Explanation

Bạn là người nước nào?"

Examples

  • Bạn là người nước nào?
  • Tôi là người Việt Nam.
  • Đây là nước nào?
  • Đó là Trung Quốc.

Explanation

Examples

  • Tôi không phải là người Nhật.
  • Đó không phải là bác sĩ.
  • Đây không phải là bạn tôi.
  • Tom không phải người Trung Quốc.

To a man older than you: anh. An older woman: chị. A younger person: em. An uncle-aged man: chú. A very elderly person: ông (m) / bà (f). You use that very word for BOTH "you" and often "I" as well.

The same person can be your anh (he is older) while you are his em. With a third person you re-pick from scratch. There is no fixed "I": you are em to one person and anh/chị to another — in the same gathering.

"tôi" ("I") is safe with strangers or in formal, distant situations. But using "tôi" with someone you should be calling anh/chị sounds cold — as if you are keeping them at arm's length. Among peers, "bạn" is friendlier.

This is why Vietnamese people often ask your age early: they CANNOT address you correctly until they know whether you are older or younger. It is practical, not nosy. The next chapter says more about this.
