The simple future: je parlerai, je finirai
Explanation
In chapter 30 you learned the near future, « aller + infinitive » (je vais étudier), very common in speech. Here now is the simple future. The rule is easy: for -er and -ir verbs, take the WHOLE infinitive and add one set of endings: je -ai, tu -as, il/elle -a, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ont. So: parler → je parlerai, tu parleras, il parlera, nous parlerons, vous parlerez, ils parleront; finir → je finirai, tu finiras. These endings are those of the verb « avoir » (j'ai, tu as, il a…) — a good way to remember them. A few verbs have a special stem (but the same endings): être → je serai, avoir → j'aurai, aller → j'irai, faire → je ferai. Typical mistake: in English the future is « will + verb », with no change to the verb, so English speakers use the present for the future — « Demain, j'étudie » ✗. In French the verb changes: « Demain, j'étudierai » ✓ (or, in speech, « je vais étudier »).
