J'ai froidI'm cold

Emotions with « être », sensations with « avoir »
Explanation
In French, to say how you feel, you choose between two verbs. For EMOTIONS and states, you use « être + adjective »: « Je suis content », « Elle est triste », « Nous sommes fatigués », « Il est malade ». The adjective agrees (content / contente / contents). BUT for body SENSATIONS, French uses « avoir + noun »: « J'ai froid », « J'ai chaud », « J'ai faim » (chapter 20), « J'ai peur », « J'ai sommeil », « J'ai soif ». Here, « froid », « faim », « peur » are NOUNS, not adjectives — so not « suis » but « ai ». Typical mistake: in English everything is said with « to be » (« I am cold », « I am hungry », « I am afraid »), so English speakers translate word for word: « Je suis froid » ✗ (that would mean « I am a cold person »!). The sensation is said with « avoir »: « J'ai froid » ✓. Rule: a feeling of the soul → « être »; a need of the body → « avoir ».

- Les enfants ont sommeil et ils ont un peu peur du noir. The children are sleepy and a little afraid of the dark.
- Il fait chaud aujourd'hui, alors j'ai chaud et j'ai soif. It's hot today, so I'm hot and thirsty.
