まちの ばしょPlaces in town

Machi no basho

Place words: basho, gakkou, byouin, ginkou, eki, kouen, tonari, ushiro, mae, chikaku. The key grammar is "~ wa …no [place] ni arimasu": ginkou wa mise no tonari ni arimasu. To ask where something is: "~ wa doko desu ka". English speakers drop the particle "ni" and say "tonari arimasu" — always say "tonari ni arimasu". Kana corner: pronouncing the place words.

Saying where: "~ ni arimasu"

Explanation

To say where a thing is, say "~ wa …no [place] ni arimasu". Put the place word (tonari, ushiro, mae, chikaku) after "no", then add "ni arimasu": ginkou wa mise no tonari ni arimasu. To ask where, say "~ wa doko desu ka". English speakers drop the particle "ni" and say "tonari arimasu" — always put in the "ni": tonari ni arimasu.
