Trabalho como médicoI work as a doctor
Talking about work. Vocabulary: o trabalho, trabalhar, o escritório, o médico, o professor, o engenheiro, o garçom, a empresa, o hospital, a loja. Key point: to say your profession with the verb "trabalhar" you use "trabalhar como + profession" (or "trabalhar de"), WITHOUT an article: "Trabalho como médico", "Ela trabalha como professora". The workplace is said with "trabalhar em": "Trabalho num hospital", "Trabalha numa empresa". Remember from chapter 4 that a profession with "ser" also takes no article: "Sou médico". English speakers, because English says "as a doctor" with an article, add "um" by mistake: "Trabalho como um médico" ✗ → "Trabalho como médico" ✓. Useful questions: "Em que você trabalha?" and "O que você faz?".

Your profession: trabalhar como / trabalhar em
Explanation
There are two ways to say what you do for work. The first you already know from chapter 4: "ser + profession", with no article — "Sou médico", "Ela é professora". The second uses the verb "trabalhar": "trabalhar como + profession" (or "trabalhar de"), also WITHOUT an article — "Trabalho como médico", "Ela trabalha como garçonete", "Trabalhamos como engenheiros". The workplace is said with "trabalhar em + place" (em + o = no, em + a = na): "Trabalho num hospital", "Trabalha numa empresa". To ask: "Em que você trabalha?" or "O que você faz?". The verb "trabalhar" is regular (-ar): trabalho, trabalha, trabalhamos, trabalham. Typical mistake: in English you say "I work AS A doctor" with an article, so English speakers copy it and add "um": "Trabalho como um médico" ✗. But in Portuguese a profession takes no article: "Trabalho como médico" ✓.
