Russian · TORFL Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 1
ЗдравствуйтеHello
Your first words of Russian — and the first hurdle: a new alphabet, Cyrillic. The good news: some letters match the Latin ones (А, К, М, О, Т sound almost the same). The bad: there are "false friends": В is "v", Н is "n", Р is "r", С is "s", У is "u", Х is "kh". They look like Latin B, H, P, C, Y, X but sound completely different — the biggest trap. Under each word there's a Latin transcription with the stress (a crutch we'll wean off). We start with greetings — здравствуйте, привет — and da / net / khorosho. Standard Russian.

Кириллица: знакомые буквы и «ложные друзья»— Cyrillic: familiar letters and "false friends"
These five letters look and sound almost like the Latin ones — a free gift:
- А аalike the "a" in "father"
- К кklike the "k" in "kit"
- М мmlike the "m" in "me"
- О оolike the "o" in "more" (when stressed)
- Т тtlike the "t" in "top"
These six look like Latin letters but sound different. The main trap — memorise them:
- В вv"v" as in "van" — NOT a "b"
- Н нn"n" as in "no"
- Р рra rolled/tapped "r"
- С сs"s" as in "see" — always
- У уu"oo" as in "boot"
- Х хkha raspy "kh", as in Scottish "loch"
Sound these out letter by letter, using what you already know:
