Fui de vacacionesI went on holiday

Travel and holidays. Vocabulary: el viaje, viajar, las vacaciones, la maleta, el pasaporte, el hotel, la playa, la foto, visitar, el mundo. Key point: in ch. 34 you learned the REGULAR preterite (viajé, comí). Now the most common irregular verbs for telling a trip: IR and SER share a form (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron); HACER (hice, hiciste, hizo…); TENER (tuve, tuviste, tuvo…); ESTAR (estuve, estuviste, estuvo…). Note: these forms take NO accent (fui, hice, tuve — unlike comí, salió). English speakers either regularize them ("yo hací" ✗) or use the 3rd person for "I" ("yo fue" ✗) → "yo hice", "yo fui" ✓.

The irregular preterite: fui, hice, tuve, estuve

Explanation

In ch. 34 you formed the regular preterite: viajé, comí, salió. But the most-used verbs for telling a trip are IRREGULAR: they change their stem and take no accent. Learn these four: IR (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron) — "fui a la playa" (I went to the beach). SER uses the SAME forms (fue muy bonito, it was very nice). HACER (hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicieron) — "hice muchas fotos" (I took many photos); note: "hizo" with z. TENER (tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvieron) — "tuve un problema en el aeropuerto" (I had a problem at the airport). ESTAR (estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvieron) — "estuve en Perú una semana" (I was in Peru for a week). Two warnings: (1) they take NO written accent: you write "fui", "hice", "tuve" (not "fuí", "hicé"). (2) Since there is no accent, the stress falls on the second-to-last or only syllable (FUI, HI-ce), not at the end like the regular one (co-MÍ). Typical mistake by English speakers: they regularize ("yo hací", "yo tuví" ✗) or confuse the person, using "fue" (he) for "I" ("yo fue" ✗) → "yo hice", "yo tuve", "yo fui" ✓.

Examples

  • El verano pasado fui a México y visité muchas ciudades.Last summer I went to Mexico and visited many cities.
  • Hice muchas fotos en la playa; el viaje fue increíble.I took many photos on the beach; the trip was incredible.
  • Tuve un problema con la maleta, pero estuve tranquilo.I had a problem with the suitcase, but I stayed calm.
  • ¿Dónde estuviste el fin de semana? — Estuve en la montaña.Where were you at the weekend? — I was in the mountains.
