ใช่ไหมครับRight?

châi mǎi kráp

The third reading gate: the tone marks ไม้เอก (่) and ไม้โท (้) on mid- and high-class consonants, plus yes/no questions: add ไหม to the end of a statement for a yes/no question, and meet the pronouns ผม/ดิฉัน/คุณ/เขา/เรา. James — a learner like you — appears and makes mistakes for us to fix together.

ไหม — yes/no questions

Explanation

Add ไหม (mǎi) to the end of a statement and it becomes a yes/no question. The word order does not change, unlike English: "khun sabaaidii" → "khun sabaaidii mǎi". To answer: repeat the word (สบายดี = yes) or ไม่ + the word (ไม่สบายดี = no); for confirming identity, answer ใช่ / ไม่ใช่. The polite particle ครับ/ค่ะ still always comes after ไหม.

Examples

  • คุณสบายดีไหม?Are you well?
  • สบายดีค่ะ.Yes, I'm well. (female)
  • เขาสบายดีไหม?Is he/she well?
  • คุณโอเคไหมครับ?Are you okay? (male asking)

รูปวรรณยุกต์: ไม้เอก และ ไม้โท— Tone Marks: ไม้เอก and ไม้โท

The tone mark is written above the initial consonant. On mid- and high-class consonants, the effect is:

  • ่ (ไม้เอก)máai èekgives a LOW tone — ข่า (khàa) = galangal; ก่อน (kɔ̀ɔn) = before
  • ้ (ไม้โท)máai thoogives a FALLING tone — ข้า (khâa) = servant; ไม้ (máai) itself = wood

Read the chapter's question words (ใช่ has ไม้เอก; ไหม has ห leading ม):
