Jangso-wa wichi

Places in a city and where they are. Words: 병원, 은행, 학교, 화장실, 공원, 위, 아래, 앞, 뒤, 옆. Key grammar: to say what is where, use "place + 에 + 있어요" — 은행이 어디에 있어요? / 은행은 학교 옆에 있어요. For position, attach 위·아래·앞·뒤·옆 after the noun and use "에". This "에" marks the spot where something exists. English speakers often use "에서" before "있다" — "학교에서 있어요" ✗ → "학교에 있어요" ✓ ("에서" is where you do an action). Pronunciation corner: the liaison in "옆에·앞에".

"어디에 있어요?" — place + 에 + 있다

Explanation

To say what is where, use "place + 에 + 있어요". Here "에" marks the spot of existence (the same letter as the "time 에" from Chapter 17). To ask: "은행이 어디에 있어요?", to answer: "은행은 학교 옆에 있어요". For an exact position, attach a position word after the noun and use "에": 학교 앞에 (in front of the school), 병원 뒤에 (behind the hospital), 책상 위에 (on the desk), 공원 옆에 (next to the park). Important: with "있다" you must use "에" — not "에서". "에서" is for a place where you do something (eat, buy). English speakers often say "학교에서 있어요" → "학교에 있어요".
