Your job: arbeiten als / arbeiten bei
Explanation
There are two ways to say what you do for work. The first you know from chapter 4: „sein + job“, with no article — „Ich bin Arzt“, „Sie ist Lehrerin“. The second uses the verb „arbeiten“ with „als“: „arbeiten als + job“, also WITHOUT an article — „Ich arbeite als Arzt“, „Er arbeitet als Kellner“. The workplace is said with „in“ (+ dative) or „bei“: „Ich arbeite in einem Büro“, „in einem Krankenhaus“, „bei einer Firma“. The verb „arbeiten“ is regular: ich arbeite, du arbeitest, er/sie arbeitet, wir arbeiten, sie arbeiten. To ask: „Was bist du von Beruf?“ or „Wo arbeitest du?“. Typical mistake: in English you say „I work AS A doctor“ with an article, so English speakers add „ein“: „Ich arbeite als ein Arzt“ ✗. But in German the job takes no article after „als“: „Ich arbeite als Arzt“ ✓ — just like after „sein“.
