Harga dan membayarPrices and paying

Price vocabulary: harga, mahal, murah, bayar, tunai, kartu, rupiah, gratis, kembalian, diskon. Key grammar: ask a price with "Ini berapa?" (how much is this?) or "Berapa harganya?" (how much is it?). The suffix "-nya" means "its/the" (harga → harganya = the price of that thing). English speakers often forget "-nya" — "Berapa harga?" ✗ → "Berapa harganya?" ✓. Answer with a number + rupiah.

Asking a price: "berapa" and the suffix "-nya"

Explanation

There are two easy ways to ask a price. The first points at the item: "Ini berapa?" (this how-much). The second uses the word "harga" + the suffix "-nya": "Berapa harganya?". The suffix "-nya" means "its / the" — "harganya" = "the price of that thing" (its price). English speakers often forget "-nya" and say "Berapa harga?" ✗ → "Berapa harganya?" ✓. Answer with a number + rupiah: "Lima puluh ribu rupiah" (note "ribu" = thousand). Comment on a price: "Mahal!" (expensive) or "Murah" (cheap). Ask for a cut: "Ada diskon?" (is there a discount?).

Examples

  • Ini berapa? How much is this?
  • Berapa harganya? How much is it (the price)?
  • Lima puluh ribu rupiah.Fifty thousand rupiah.
  • Barang ini mahal. Saya bayar tunai. This item is expensive. I pay in cash.
