Connecting sentences: dan, tetapi, karena, jadi
Explanation
Let's learn four connectors. (1) "dan" joins two similar things (addition): "Saya belajar bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jepang" (I study Indonesian and Japanese). (2) "tetapi" states a contrast: "Bahasa Indonesia sulit tetapi menyenangkan" (Indonesian is hard but fun). (3) "karena" gives a REASON, placed before the reason (like "because"): "Saya di rumah karena hujan" (at home ← karena → it rains). (4) "jadi" gives a RESULT, placed before the result (like "so"): "Hujan, jadi saya di rumah" (it rains → jadi → at home). A paired structure: "Karena [reason], [result]": "Karena saya suka bahasa Indonesia, saya belajar setiap hari" (Because I like Indonesian, I study every day). Important note: "jadi" = so (the result follows), "karena" = because (the reason follows). English speakers often get confused: they mean "Saya belajar keras karena saya suka" (I study because I like) but say "Saya belajar keras jadi saya suka" (I study so I like — reversed meaning). To give a reason, use "karena".
