Vietnamese · KNLTV Bậc 1 (A1) · Chapter 4

Đây là bạn tôiThis is my friend

Pointing and introducing: đây / đó / kia (this / that / that over there). And a big point for English speakers: the possessor goes AFTER the noun — bạn tôi = "friend my", not "tôi bạn". Meet giáo viên (teacher), bác sĩ (doctor), and the pronouns anh / chị / em.

đây / đó / kia — pointing

Explanation

Three distance levels: đây = this / here (near the speaker), đó = that / there (near the listener), kia = that over there (far from both). To introduce or point at someone/something, use "Đây là + N": Đây là Linh. To attach "này" to a noun, put it AFTER the noun: người này = this person (not "này người").

Examples

  • Đây là Linh. This is Linh.
  • Đó là bác sĩ.That is a doctor.
  • Kia là giáo viên.That over there is a teacher.
  • Người này là bạn tôi.This person is my friend.

Possession: noun + owner

Explanation

Vietnamese reverses the English order: the owner comes AFTER the thing owned. bạn tôi = "friend my" = my friend; tên tôi = my name; bạn Nam = Nam's friend. No linking word is needed. You may add "của" for emphasis or clarity: bạn của tôi = bạn tôi. Never say "tôi bạn" the English way.

Examples

  • bạn tôimy friend
  • tên tôimy name
  • giáo viên của tôimy teacher (with "của")
  • Đây là bạn của Nam.This is Nam's friend.

Ôn thanh điệu: nặng và âm cuối tắc— Tone Review: nặng and stop finals

Four stop finals are held at the closure — not exploded. Practise with words you already know:

  • -tbiệt (tạm biệt) — tongue stops behind the teeth, no release
  • -chọc (học sinh) — back of tongue stops, no release
  • -plips close and stop — held silent (e.g. đẹp, later)
  • -chtongue blade stops at the hard palate — clipped short

Read aloud, keeping the nặng tone on "bạn" short and closed:
