Đường và phương hướngRoads and directions

Direction vocabulary: đường, rẽ, trái, phải, thẳng, ngã tư, góc, bản đồ, đường đi, qua. Key grammar: give directions with verb + direction, no preposition needed — "rẽ trái" (turn left), "rẽ phải" (turn right), "đi thẳng" (go straight). English speakers, used to "turn TO the left", tend to add "tới/đến" — "rẽ tới phải" ✗ → "rẽ phải" ✓. Add a place with "ở": "rẽ phải ở ngã tư". Tone corner: the ngã tone in "rẽ" and "ngã tư" — against the hỏi tone "rẻ" from ch22.

Directions: "rẽ trái", "đi thẳng" (no preposition)

Explanation

Giving directions in Vietnamese is very compact: verb + direction, no preposition. "Rẽ trái" (turn left), "rẽ phải" (turn right), "đi thẳng" (go straight), "qua đường" (cross the road). English speakers, used to "turn TO the left", tend to add "tới" or "đến" — "rẽ tới phải" ✗ → "rẽ phải" ✓. To say where to turn, add "ở + place" (remember ch24): "Rẽ phải ở ngã tư" (turn right at the crossroads), "Đi thẳng đến góc đường rồi rẽ trái" (go straight to the corner then turn left). A common chain: "Đi thẳng, rồi rẽ trái, chợ ở bên phải" (Go straight, then turn left, the market is on the right).

Examples

  • Rẽ trái.Turn left.
  • Rẽ phải ở ngã tư.Turn right at the crossroads.
  • Đi thẳng, rồi rẽ trái.Go straight, then turn left.
  • Chợ ở bên phải.The market is on the right.
