Review and completion of A1. Key point: the CONNECTORS, the little words that link short sentences into natural speech — in German with consequences for WORD ORDER. Three types: (1) und (and) / aber (but) / oder (or) / denn (for) — they change NOTHING: „Ich bin müde, aber ich gehe zur Party.“ (I'm tired, but I'm going to the party.) (2) weil (because, cause) — sends the verb to the END: „Ich gehe schlafen, weil ich müde BIN.“ (I'm going to sleep because I am tired.) (3) deshalb (therefore, consequence) — needs inversion (verb in position 2, before the subject): „Ich bin müde, DESHALB gehe ich schlafen.“ (I'm tired, so I'm going to sleep.) The classic English-speaker MISTAKE: after „weil“, NOT sending the verb to the end — „weil ich BIN müde“ ✗ instead of „weil ich müde BIN“ ✓. And confusing cause and consequence: „weil“ shows the reason, „deshalb“ the result. This is the last chapter of A1: here you bring it all together — greeting, introducing yourself, present and past, polite requests, talking about family, food, travel and parties — in linked sentences. Connectors: und, aber, weil, deshalb
Explanation
You already know a lot; now it is about LINKING. Connectors make speech natural — but in German they also determine WORD ORDER. There are three types. TYPE 1 — und, aber, oder, denn: they join two main clauses and change NOTHING in the structure (the verb stays in position 2). „Ich war müde, aber ich bin zur Party gegangen.“ (I was tired, but I went to the party.) „Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn es regnet.“ (I'm staying home, for it's raining.) TYPE 2 — weil (cause, answers „why?“): it introduces a subordinate clause and sends the VERB to the very END. „Ich gehe schlafen, WEIL ich müde BIN.“ (I'm going to sleep because I am tired.) „Ich bleibe zu Hause, WEIL es REGNET.“ (I stay home because it is raining.) TYPE 3 — deshalb (consequence, „therefore, for that reason“): it stands in position 1, so the verb comes right after it — before the subject (inversion). „Ich bin müde, DESHALB GEHE ich schlafen.“ (I'm tired, so I'm going to sleep.) The MAIN mistake of English speakers: after „weil“, NOT putting the verb at the end, because English does not change word order („because I am tired“). You say „weil ich müde BIN“ ✓, NOT „weil ich BIN müde“ ✗. And careful with cause vs. consequence: „weil“ shows the reason (comes before the reason), „deshalb“ shows the result (comes before the consequence). „Ich bin müde, WEIL ich viel gearbeitet habe“ (reason = the work) ✓; „Ich habe viel gearbeitet, DESHALB bin ich müde“ (consequence = the tiredness) ✓. With this you complete A1 — you tell whole stories, not just single sentences. Bravo for getting this far!
