ともだちに でんわします I call my friend
Talking about phones and messages. Vocabulary: denwa, keitai, mēru, bangō, henji, kakeru, deru, okuru, ato de, moshi moshi. Key grammar: the particle "ni" that marks the person you are addressing. The person you phone or message is shown with "ni": "tomodachi ni denwa shimasu" (I call my friend), "haha ni mēru o okurimasu" (I send my mother an email). The thing takes "o", and the person (the addressee) takes "ni": the email takes "o", the friend takes "ni". This "ni" is separate from the time "ni" (chapter 17) and the place "ni" (chapter 24); it means "towards / aimed at (a person)". English speakers, thinking of "call my friend", tend to use "o" for the person: "tomodachi o denwa shimasu" ✗ → "tomodachi ni denwa shimasu" ✓. - Yuki あいての ひとは「に」です：「ともだちに でんわします」。「を」は でんわや メールに つかいます。 The person you address takes "ni": "tomodachi ni denwa shimasu". "O" is for the call or the email.
- Mike なるほど。ともだちに でんわします。それから ユキさんに メールを おくります。 I see. I'll call my friend. Then I'll send you an email, Yuki.
- Yuki ありがとう。わたしは でんわに でられない ときが あるので、メールが いいです。 Thanks. There are times I can't answer the phone, so email is better.

Grammar
あいての「に」：ひとに でんわ・メール The addressee "ni": call/message a person
でんわを かけたり、メールを おくったり する とき、その あいて（ひと）は じょし「に」で しめします：「ともだちに でんわします」「せんせいに メールを おくります」「ははに でんわを かけます」。もの（でんわ・メール）には「を」、あいての ひとには「に」を つかいます：「ともだち（に） ＋ メール（を） ＋ おくります」。この「に」は「〜の ほうへ むかう」きもちで、「あげる／おしえる／へんじする」などの あいてにも つかえます。ちゅうい：この「に」は じかんの「に」（ch17「しちじに」）や、ある ばしょの「に」（ch24「つくえの うえに あります」）とは やくわりが ちがいます。えいごの ひとは、えいごの「call my friend」で ひとが もくてきごに なる ため、ひとに「を」を つかいがちです：「ともだちを でんわします」✗ →「ともだちに でんわします」✓。
When you make a call or send a message, the person you address is shown with the particle "ni": "tomodachi ni denwa shimasu" (I call my friend), "sensei ni mēru o okurimasu" (I send the teacher an email), "haha ni denwa o kakemasu" (I make a call to my mother). The thing (the call, the email) takes "o", and the addressee takes "ni": friend takes "ni", email takes "o". This "ni" carries the feeling of "heading towards (a person)", and works for the recipient of "give / tell / reply" too. Note: this "ni" plays a different role from the time "ni" (chapter 17, "shichi-ji ni") and the location "ni" of existence (chapter 24, "tsukue no ue ni arimasu"). English speakers, because in "call my friend" the person becomes the object, tend to use "o" for the person: "tomodachi o denwa shimasu" ✗ → "tomodachi ni denwa shimasu" ✓.

- ははに メールを おくりました。 Haha ni mēru o okurimashita. I sent my mother an email.
