J'ai mal à la têteI have a headache
Talking about the body and health. Vocabulary: le corps, la tête, la gorge, le ventre, le mal, la fièvre, la toux, malade, le médecin, le médicament. Key point: to say where it hurts, French says « avoir mal À + article + body part »: « J'ai mal À LA tête » (I have a headache), « J'ai mal À LA gorge ». And « à » combines with the article: à+le = au, à+les = aux: « J'ai mal AU ventre » (my stomach hurts), « J'ai mal AUX dents » (my teeth hurt). English speakers forget the « à » — « J'ai mal la tête » ✗ → « J'ai mal à la tête » ✓. You also say « avoir de la fièvre » (to have a fever), « être malade » (to be ill). To ask: « Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas ? » (What is wrong?) or « Où as-tu mal ? » (Where does it hurt?); to wish someone well: « Bon rétablissement ! » (Get well!).

Avoir mal À + article: au, à la, aux
Explanation
To say that a body part hurts, French uses « avoir mal À » + the article + the body part. The little word « à » is obligatory: « J'ai mal À LA tête », « J'ai mal À LA gorge ». As with « de » (remember: de+le = du), « à » combines with the article: à+le = AU, à+les = AUX (but à+la stays « à la », à+l' stays « à l' »). So: « J'ai mal AU ventre » (à+le), « J'ai mal AUX dents » (à+les), « J'ai mal À LA gorge », « J'ai mal À L'oreille » (my ear hurts). English speakers drop the « à » — « J'ai mal la tête » ✗ → « J'ai mal à la tête » ✓. For a fever: « J'ai de la fièvre »; for the general state: « Je suis malade » (I am ill). To ask: « Où as-tu mal ? » (Where does it hurt?), « Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas ? ». And you say « Bon rétablissement ! » (Get well!) to someone who is ill.
