Your job: travailler comme / dans
Explanation
There are two ways to say what you do. The first you know from chapter 4: « être + job », with no article — « Je suis médecin », « Elle est professeure ». The second uses the verb « travailler »: « travailler comme + job », also WITHOUT an article — « Je travaille comme médecin », « Il travaille comme serveur ». The workplace is said with « travailler dans + place » — « Je travaille dans un bureau », « dans une entreprise », « dans un hôpital » — or « travailler à + l'hôpital ». The verb « travailler » is regular (-er): je travaille, tu travailles, il travaille, nous travaillons, ils travaillent. To ask: « Qu'est-ce que tu fais dans la vie ? » or « Tu travailles où ? ». Typical mistake: in English you say « I work AS A doctor » with an article, so English speakers add « un »: « Je travaille comme un médecin » ✗. But in French the job takes no article after « comme »: « Je travaille comme médecin » ✓.
