The past with -एको: के किनेको?

Explanation

In everyday talk, something that has happened puts -एको on the verb: किन्नु → किनेको "bought", खानु → खाएको "ate, drank", दिनु → दिएको "gave". -ने is for plans, -एको for what is done: भोलि किन्ने "buying tomorrow", हिजो किनेको "bought yesterday". Questions use it too: के किनेको? "what did you buy?", पैसा कसले दिएको? "who paid?"

Examples

  • केkeकिkiनेneकोko?What did you buy?
  • हिhiजोjoफphaलlफूphūलlकिkiनेneकोko।I bought fruit yesterday.
  • चिchiयाyāखाkhāएeकोko?Did you have tea?

Who did it: मैले, तिमीले, कसले

Explanation

When someone did something to something (bought it, ate it, gave it), the doer takes -ले: मैले मासु किनेको "I bought meat", माइकले पैसा दिएको "Mike paid". म → मैले, तिमी → तिमीले, तपाईं → तपाईंले, and को "who" → कसले: पैसा कसले दिएको? "who paid?" Verbs like जानु "go", with nothing bought or eaten, take no -ले.

Examples

  • मैmaiलेleमाmāसुsuकिkiनेneकोko।I bought meat.
  • माMāइiकkलेleपैpaiसाsāदिdiएeकोko।Mike paid.
  • तिtiमीmīलेleकेkeखाkhāएeकोko?What did you eat? (to a friend)
  • पैpaiसाsāकkaसsलेleदिdiएeकोko?Who paid?

नेपालमा पैसा र बजारMoney and the bazaar in Nepal

This page brings together words from chapters 11 to 15: रुपैयाँ, पैसा, बजार, महँगो भयो.

Rupees and paisa

Nepal's money is the Nepali rupee, नेपाली रुपैयाँ. Its sign is रु: रु१०० is a hundred rupees. A rupee is 100 paisa, and पैसा is also the everyday word for "money".

The rupee is issued by Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank. The notes in everyday use run from रु5 to रु1000: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000.

The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee: रु1.60 to ₹1.

Asan

Asan, in central Kathmandu, is a market square where six streets meet. It has been one of the city's main marketplaces since ancient times.

In its bazaar you can get everything from food, spices and cloth to electronics: almost anything पाइन्छ there.

Bargaining

When people bargain, महँगो भयो! "that's expensive!" is a very common expression. Anita said it too, in chapter 13.
