The simple future: estudarei, fará

Explanation

In chapter 30 you learned the near future, "ir + infinitive" (vou estudar), very common in speech. Now comes the simple future, more formal and written. The rule is easy: take the WHOLE infinitive (estudar, comer, ir) and add a single ending — the same for all three verb groups: eu -ei, você/ele/ela -á, nós -emos, eles/elas/vocês -ão. So: estudar → estudarei, estudará, estudaremos, estudarão; comer → comerei, comerá; ir → irei, irá. Note the ending ALWAYS carries the stress: estuda-REI, esta-RÁ, fala-RÃO. Only three verbs are irregular (they drop a syllable): fazer → farei, dizer → direi, trazer → trarei. Typical mistake: in English the future is just "will + verb", with no change to the verb, so English speakers use the present for the future — "Amanhã eu estudo" ✗. In Portuguese the verb changes form: "Amanhã estudarei" ✓ (or, in speech, "vou estudar").

Examples

  • Amanhã estudarei português.Tomorrow I will study Portuguese.
  • No ano que vem, viajaremos ao Brasil.Next year, we will travel to Brazil.
  • Ela chegará logo e nós começaremos. She will arrive soon and we will begin.
  • Um dia farei essa viagem. One day I will make that trip.
