ราคาและการจ่ายเงินPrices and paying

raa-khaa lɛ́ kaan-càai-ngən

Price vocabulary: ราคา, แพง, ถูก, จ่าย, เงินสด, บัตร, บาท, ฟรี, เงินทอน, ลดราคา. Key grammar: ask a price with "อันนี้เท่าไร" — the thing comes first, the question word "เท่าไร" goes at the end. English speakers front the question word like "How much...?" — "เท่าไรอันนี้" ✗ → "อันนี้เท่าไร" ✓. Answer with a number + บาท (baht). Tone corner: the tones in the price words.

Asking a price: "… เท่าไร"

Explanation

To ask a price, put the item first, then add the question word "เท่าไร" (how much) at the end: "อันนี้เท่าไร" (อันนี้ = this thing; เท่าไร = how much). The item comes at the front — Thai does not move the question word to the front. English speakers, used to "How much is this?", often say "เท่าไรอันนี้" ✗ → "อันนี้เท่าไร" ✓. Answer: number + บาท — "ห้าสิบบาท" (fifty baht). React to a price: "แพงจัง!" (so expensive) or "ถูกจัง" (so cheap). Ask for a discount: "ลดหน่อยได้ไหม" (can you lower it a bit?).

Examples

  • อันนี้เท่าไรHow much is this?
  • ห้าสิบบาทFifty baht.
  • เสื้อตัวนี้แพงThis shirt is expensive.
  • ผมจ่ายเงินสดI pay in cash.
