English · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 45

It was late, so I went home Sudah larut, jadi aku pulang

Ini bab terakhir Band 1 — ulasan yang menyambung kalimat-kalimatmu. Kosakata: and, but, or, so, because, also, then, again, together, everyone, finally, really. Tata bahasa inti: empat kata kecil yang MENYAMBUNG gagasan. "and" menambah gagasan serupa: "I like tea and coffee". "but" menunjukkan kontras: "I like tea but not coffee". "so" menunjukkan HASIL: "It was late, so I went home". "because" memberi ALASAN: "I went home because it was late". Perhatikan "so" dan "because" adalah bayangan cermin: dengan "so", sebab dulu, hasil kemudian (sebab, so hasil); dengan "because", hasil dulu, alasan kemudian (hasil because alasan). Tiap sambungan pakai HANYA satu kata sambung. Catatan: sebagian pembelajar menandai alasan dan hasil sekaligus — "Because I was tired, so I slept" ✗ → "I slept because I was tired" ✓ atau "I was tired, so I slept" ✓. Pilih satu. Sudut pengucapan: kata sambung lemah "and" /ən/, "but" /bət/ dan "because" /bɪˈkəz/. Bagus sekali — ini menyelesaikan Band 1!

Why are you tired? — Kenapa kamu lelah?

  1. Emma Minsu, you look tired today. Why? Minsu, kamu terlihat lelah hari ini. Kenapa?
  2. Minsu Because I studied all night, so I am sleepy. Karena aku belajar semalaman, jadi aku mengantuk. (slip: pakai satu kata sambung saja: I studied all night, so I am sleepy)
  3. Emma Use just one — say "I studied all night, so I am sleepy", or "I am sleepy because I studied all night". Pakai satu saja — katakan "I studied all night, so I am sleepy", atau "I am sleepy because I studied all night".
  4. Minsu Ah! I am sleepy because I studied all night. But the test was easy! Ah! Aku mengantuk karena belajar semalaman. Tapi ujiannya mudah!
  5. Emma Good! So you can relax now and rest. Bagus! Jadi sekarang kamu bisa santai dan istirahat.
  6. Minsu Yes. I will sleep, and then I will celebrate! Ya. Aku akan tidur, lalu aku akan merayakannya!

We finished the course! — Kita menyelesaikan kursusnya!

  1. Jack Emma, we finished the English course! Are you happy? Emma, kita menyelesaikan kursus bahasa Inggris! Kamu senang?
  2. Emma Yes, really happy! It was hard, but I learned a lot. Ya, benar-benar senang! Sulit, tapi aku belajar banyak.
  3. Jack Me too. So let's celebrate together this weekend. Aku juga. Jadi ayo kita rayakan bersama akhir pekan ini.
  4. Emma Great idea! We can go to the beach or watch a film. Ide bagus! Kita bisa ke pantai atau menonton film.
  5. Jack The beach, because the weather is nice. And then we can eat dinner. Ke pantai saja, karena cuacanya bagus. Lalu kita bisa makan malam.
  6. Emma Perfect. Finally, we can relax. Well done, everyone! Sempurna. Akhirnya kita bisa santai. Kerja bagus, semuanya!

Joining sentences: and, but, so, because Menyambung kalimat: and, but, so, because

Four little words let you join two ideas into one sentence. "and" ADDS a similar idea: "I like tea and coffee", "She reads and writes". "but" shows a CONTRAST: "I like tea but not coffee", "It is small but comfortable". "or" gives a CHOICE: "Tea or coffee?", "We can walk or take the bus". "so" shows a RESULT — it goes between the cause and the result: "It was late, so I went home" (cause + so + result). "because" gives a REASON — it goes before the reason: "I went home because it was late" (result + because + cause). So "so" and "because" describe the SAME situation from opposite ends: you can say "I was tired, so I slept" OR "I slept because I was tired", and the order of cause and result flips. Two rules: (1) use only ONE connector per link — do not use "because" and "so" together; (2) in writing, we usually put a comma before "but" and "so" when they join two full sentences. Note: many learners mark both the cause and the result at once, copying their first language: "Because I was tired, so I slept" ✗. Keep just one: "I slept because I was tired" ✓ or "I was tired, so I slept" ✓.

Empat kata kecil membuatmu bisa menyambung dua gagasan jadi satu kalimat. "and" MENAMBAH gagasan serupa: "I like tea and coffee", "She reads and writes". "but" menunjukkan KONTRAS: "I like tea but not coffee", "It is small but comfortable". "or" memberi PILIHAN: "Tea or coffee?", "We can walk or take the bus". "so" menunjukkan HASIL — berada di antara sebab dan hasil: "It was late, so I went home" (sebab + so + hasil). "because" memberi ALASAN — berada sebelum alasan: "I went home because it was late" (hasil + because + sebab). Jadi "so" dan "because" menggambarkan situasi yang SAMA dari dua ujung: kamu bisa berkata "I was tired, so I slept" ATAU "I slept because I was tired", dan urutan sebab–hasil terbalik. Dua aturan: (1) tiap sambungan pakai SATU kata sambung — jangan pakai "because" dan "so" bersama; (2) dalam tulisan, kita biasa menaruh koma sebelum "but" dan "so" saat menyambung dua kalimat lengkap. Catatan: banyak pembelajar menandai sebab dan hasil sekaligus, meniru bahasa ibu: "Because I was tired, so I slept" ✗. Simpan satu saja: "I slept because I was tired" ✓ atau "I was tired, so I slept" ✓.

  • I like tea and coffee. Saya suka teh dan kopi.
  • I like tea but not coffee. Saya suka teh tapi tidak suka kopi.
  • It was late, so I went home. Sudah larut, jadi aku pulang.
  • I went home because it was late. Aku pulang karena sudah larut.
  • Do you want tea or coffee? Kamu mau teh atau kopi?
