A1 review and end. Key point: the CONNECTORS, the little words that link short sentences into natural speech. Coordinating: et (and — addition), mais (but — contrast), ou (or — choice). Cause: parce que (because — answers « why? »). Consequence: donc, alors (« so, that's why »). Addition: aussi (also), de plus (furthermore). Sequence for telling a story: d'abord (first), ensuite (then), enfin (finally). Without them, you speak in detached blocks (« Je suis fatigué. Je vais dormir. » — I'm tired. I'll sleep.); with them, speech flows (« Je suis fatigué, donc je vais dormir. » — I'm tired, so I'll sleep). The main MISTAKE, very English-speaker: confusing CAUSE and CONSEQUENCE. « parce que » introduces the cause (it comes before the reason); « donc / alors » introduces the result (it comes before the consequence). « Je suis fatigué PARCE QUE j'ai beaucoup travaillé » (I'm tired because I worked a lot — cause) ✓; « J'ai beaucoup travaillé, DONC je suis fatigué » (I worked a lot, so I'm tired — consequence) ✓. Swapping them reverses the meaning. This is the last chapter of A1: here you put it all together — greeting, introducing yourself, the present and the past, polite requests, talking about family, food, travel and parties — in linked sentences. Connectors: et, mais, parce que, donc

Explanation

You already know a lot; what remains is to LINK the ideas. Connectors make speech natural instead of choppy. The main groups: (1) JOINING — « et » (and — addition), « ou » (or — choice): « Je suis allé à la plage et j'ai mangé une glace. » (I went to the beach and ate an ice cream.) (2) OPPOSING — « mais » (but): « J'étais fatigué, mais je suis allé à la fête. » (I was tired, but I went to the party.) (3) CAUSE — « parce que » (because) answers « why? » and comes BEFORE the reason: « Je ne suis pas venu PARCE QUE j'étais malade. » (I didn't come because I was sick.) (4) CONSEQUENCE — « donc », « alors » come BEFORE the result: « J'étais malade, DONC je ne suis pas venu. » (I was sick, so I didn't come.) (5) ADDITION — « aussi », « de plus »: « Il parle anglais ; de plus, il parle français. » (He speaks English; besides, he speaks French.) (6) SEQUENCE for storytelling — « d'abord… ensuite… enfin »: « D'abord je suis arrivé, ensuite j'ai mangé, et enfin j'ai dormi. » (First I arrived, then I ate, and finally I slept.) The number-one MISTAKE, typical of English speakers: swapping CAUSE and CONSEQUENCE. In English « because » and « so » link in opposite directions, and it's easy to confuse. Remember: « parce que » looks BACK, at the cause; « donc » looks FORWARD, at the effect. « Je suis fatigué PARCE QUE j'ai beaucoup travaillé » (the cause is the work) ✓; « J'ai beaucoup travaillé, DONC je suis fatigué » (the effect is the tiredness) ✓. If you swap them — « Je suis fatigué, donc j'ai beaucoup travaillé » — the meaning is backwards. Little rule: PARCE QUE + the reason; DONC + the result. With this, you finish A1 telling whole stories, not just isolated sentences. Well done for getting this far!
