French · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 44
Un cadeau pour toiA gift for you
Parties and celebrations. Vocabulary: la fête, le cadeau, l'anniversaire, l'invitation, Noël, donner, recevoir, offrir, fêter, le gâteau. Key point: the INDIRECT object PRONOUNS — the « to whom » of the sentence. With verbs of giving and speaking (donner, offrir, dire, envoyer, parler), the question is « à qui ? » (to whom?): je donne un cadeau À MARIE → je LUI donne un cadeau (I give her a gift). The pronouns are: me (to me), te (to you), LUI (to him OR to her), nous (to us), vous (to you), LEUR (to them). Two new things: « lui » serves for a man and a woman alike (unlike the direct le/la of chapter 40), and « leur » (to them) is invariable — it takes NO -s (don't confuse it with the possessive « leur/leurs » = « their », seen in chapter 6). As in chapter 40, the pronoun comes BEFORE the verb: « Je LUI offre un gâteau » (I offer him/her a cake), « Elle NOUS envoie une invitation » (She sends us an invitation). The classic English-speaker MISTAKE: English says « I give her a gift », with no preposition and the person before the thing; so people say « je donne elle un cadeau » ✗. In French: « je lui donne un cadeau » ✓, or « je donne un cadeau à elle » ✓.

Donner elle / lui donner
- CamilleSamedi, c'est l'anniversaire de Chloé. Tu as pensé au cadeau ?Saturday is Chloé's birthday. Have you thought about the gift?
- MikeOui ! Je vais donner elle un livre.Yes! I'm going to give her a book. (slip: English order, no preposition — French needs « lui » before the verb, or « à elle »)
- CamillePresque ! En français on ne dit pas « donner elle ». Dis « lui donner un livre », ou « donner un livre à elle ».Almost! In French we don't say « donner elle ». Say « lui donner un livre », or « donner un livre à elle ».
- MikeAh, « lui » avant le verbe ! Et « lui » marche pour elle aussi ? Donc : je vais lui donner un livre.Ah, « lui » before the verb! And « lui » works for her too? So: I'm going to give her a book.
- CamilleExactement, « lui » sert pour lui comme pour elle. Et pour plusieurs personnes, c'est « leur ».Exactly, « lui » serves for him and for her. And for several people, it's « leur ».
- MikeSuper ! Alors je vais lui donner un livre, et je vais leur dire « joyeux anniversaire ».Great! So I'll give her a book, and I'll say « happy birthday » to them.

- LucasC'est gentil ! Moi aussi, j'ai un petit quelque chose pour elle. Tiens. That's kind! I also have a little something for her. Here.

Indirect pronouns: lui, leur (to whom)
Explanation
In chapter 40, you learned the DIRECT object (the « what »: le/la/les). Here is the INDIRECT object — the « to whom ». It appears with verbs of giving and speaking: donner, offrir, envoyer, dire, parler, écrire, montrer. The question is « à qui ? » (to whom?): je donne un cadeau À MARIE (I give a gift to Marie). The indirect pronouns are: me (to me), te (to you), LUI (to him or to her), nous (to us), vous (to you), LEUR (to them). Two new, important points. (1) « lui » is NEUTRAL: it replaces « à lui » as well as « à elle » — « Je parle à Paul → je LUI parle », « Je parle à Marie → je LUI parle » (in chapter 40 the direct one changed: le/la). (2) « leur » (to them) NEVER takes -s. Don't confuse it with the possessive « leur/leurs » (= « their », chapter 6): « je LEUR donne leurS cadeaux » (the first « leur » = to them, the second « leurs » = the gifts that are theirs). As in chapter 40, the pronoun comes BEFORE the verb: « Je LUI offre un gâteau » (I offer him/her a cake), « Elle NOUS envoie une invitation » (She sends us an invitation), « Nous LEUR disons merci » (We say thank you to them). The classic English-speaker MISTAKE: in English you say « I give her a gift » — no preposition, the person before the thing. Word for word, that gives « je donne elle un cadeau » ✗, which does not exist. Say « je lui donne un cadeau » ✓, or « je donne un cadeau à elle » ✓. Tip: if you can put an « à » before the person (parler À, donner À), it is an indirect object → lui / leur.
Examples
- Demain, c'est l'anniversaire de Chloé ; je vais lui offrir un cadeau.Tomorrow is Chloé's birthday; I'm going to give her a gift.
- Elle m'a offert un gâteau et elle nous a dit merci. She gave me a cake and she said thank you to us.
- Nous leur avons envoyé une invitation pour la fête.We sent them an invitation to the party.
- Qu'est-ce que tu vas offrir à tes parents pour Noël ?What are you going to give your parents for Christmas?
- J'ai acheté un souvenir et je vais te le donner à la fête.I bought a souvenir and I'm going to give it to you at the party.
