Russian · TORFL Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 42
Я умею плаватьI can swim
Technology and skills. Words: технология, компьютер, интернет, приложение, программа, экран, пароль, файл, сеть, скачать, уметь, мочь. Key grammar: two verbs meaning «can» — УМЕТЬ and МОЧЬ + the infinitive. «Уметь» is a learned SKILL: «Я умею плавать» (I can/know how to swim), «Она умеет пользоваться компьютером» (умею, умеешь, умеет, умеем, умеете, умеют). «Мочь» is a POSSIBILITY given the circumstances: «Я могу помочь» (I can help), «Он не может прийти сегодня» (he can’t come today) (могу, можешь, может — «г» changes to «ж»). This is NOT the same as «можно» from chapter 37 (permission — «Можно войти?», May I come in?). English speakers’ mistake: in English one word «can» covers both skill and possibility, so they take «мочь» for a skill: «Я могу плавать» (as a skill) ✗ → «Я умею плавать» ✓. A skill is «уметь», a possibility is «мочь». Reading: the unstressed «о» sounds like «а» (akanye).

Уметь and мочь — two ways to say «can»
Explanation
In Russian «can» is two different verbs, both with the infinitive. УМЕТЬ = a learned SKILL: to swim, to drive, to read Russian. Conjugation: я умею, ты умеешь, он умеет, мы умеем, вы умеете, они умеют. «Я умею плавать» = I have the skill. МОЧЬ = a POSSIBILITY here and now, by circumstance: you have the time, energy, permission. Conjugation with a «г/ж» change: я могу, ты можешь, он может, мы можем, вы можете, они могут. «Я могу прийти завтра» = circumstances allow it. Negation is «не» before the verb: «Я не умею танцевать» (no skill), «Я не могу прийти» (circumstances get in the way). Important: this is NOT «можно» from chapter 37 — «можно» is impersonal and means permission («Можно войти?»). English speakers’ mistake: in English there is one «can», so they say «Я могу плавать» about a skill ✗. But a skill is «уметь»: «Я умею плавать» ✓. Ask yourself: is it a skill (уметь) or a possibility in the moment (мочь)?
Examples
- Я умею плавать.I can swim. (I know how)
- Ты умеешь пользоваться компьютером?Do you know how to use a computer?
- Я могу помочь тебе с программой.I can help you with the program.
- Он не может прийти сегодня.He can’t come today.
- Она умеет говорить по-русски.She can speak Russian. (she knows how)

Технологии в России: Яндекс, Telegram и оплата картойTechnology in Russia: Yandex, Telegram and paying by card
Russia is a very «digital» country. Almost everyone has a smartphone, fast internet and dozens of apps. Russians switched early to online banks, e-government and super-apps that do everything at once. Let us look at how Russians communicate, order taxis and food, and pay without cash.
VKontakte, Telegram and WhatsApp
Russia’s main social network is «ВКонтакте» (VK for short): it is like Facebook, but with music, videos and interest groups. For messaging «Telegram» is very popular — a fast messenger with news channels and big chats; it was created by the Russian Pavel Durov. «WhatsApp» is also widely used for family and friends. People rarely write emails in everyday life — almost all communication goes through messengers. Voice messages are very popular: it is often easier to record a «voice note» than to type.
Yandex — the Russian super-service
«Яндекс» (Yandex) is the Russian Google and much more. There is search, maps and a translator, and also «Yandex Go» (taxi and delivery), «Yandex Eda» and «Lavka» (groceries in fifteen minutes), «Kinopoisk» (films) and «Yandex Music». One app is the whole life of the city. Separate from it stands «Госуслуги» (Gosuslugi) — a website and app where you can get a passport, book a doctor, pay a fine and submit documents online without leaving home. E-government in Russia is very well developed.
Paying by card and QR
Russia is an almost cashless country. People pay by card everywhere — even for a small coffee or a bus ticket. Tap your phone or card — and it is done. «СБП» (the Faster Payments System) is very popular: you transfer money to a friend by phone number instantly and free, or pay by QR code in a shop. Banks like «Сбербанк» (Sberbank) and «Т-Банк» (former Tinkoff) have made apps where you can do everything: transfer, pay, open a deposit. Cash still exists, but many young people hardly carry it.
In Russia a smartphone is the key to the whole city: a message to a friend, a taxi, lunch, payment and even documents. The technology here is fast, convenient and often homegrown, Russian. If you know how to use an app and you have a card, you can do almost everything without leaving home.

Безударная «о» звучит как «а» (акание)— The unstressed «о» sounds like «а» (akanye)
Stress matters in Russian: stressed vowels sound clear, unstressed ones change. The main rule is «akanye»: an unstressed «о» sounds like «а». In «хорошо» there are three «о», but the stress is only on the last one: kha-ra-SHÓ — the first two «о» sound like «а». In «технология» the stress is on «-ло-», and the «о» before it sounds like «а»: tekh-na-LÓ-gi-ya. Likewise «окно» = ak-NÓ, «Москва» = mask-VÁ, «молоко» = ma-la-KÓ. Write «о», but read «а» when the stress does not fall on it. This makes Russian speech soft and «singing». Find the stress — and the other «о» become «а».
