Что подарить маме?What to give mum?

Shto padarítʼ máme?

Celebrations and gifts. Words: праздник, день рождения, подарок, торт, цветы, гость, вечеринка, открытка, сюрприз, дарить, поздравлять, желать. Key grammar: how to give gifts — the verb «дарить/подарить» (and «дать») takes TWO objects: TO WHOM (the recipient in the dative, chapter 40) and WHAT (the gift in the accusative, chapter 19). «Я дарю МАМЕ ЦВЕТЫ» (I give mum flowers): маме — to whom? (dative), цветы — what? (accusative). The recipient goes in the dative: мама → маме, друг → другу, брат → брату. It is the same dative as «звоню маме» (chapter 40). Conjugation: я дарю, ты даришь, он дарит; «дай!» (give!) from «дать». English speakers’ mistake: in English «give MUM a gift» has the recipient with no ending, so they put it in the accusative: «Я дарю маму подарок» ✗ → «Я дарю МАМЕ подарок» ✓. To whom? — dative; what? — accusative. Reading: the silent «д» in «праздник» and the cluster «жд».

Giving to whom what — dative + accusative

Explanation

The verbs of giving — «дарить/подарить» and «дать» — take TWO objects at once: TO WHOM (the recipient) and WHAT (the gift). The recipient goes in the DATIVE (chapter 40), and the gift in the ACCUSATIVE (chapter 19). Pattern: дарю + TO WHOM (dat.) + WHAT (acc.): «Я дарю МАМЕ ЦВЕТЫ». To whom? — маме (мама → маме, друг → другу, брат → брату, дети → детям). What? — цветы (книга → книгу, торт → торт). It is the same recipient dative as «звоню маме» (chapter 40). Conjugation of «дарить»: я дарю, ты даришь, он дарит, мы дарим, они дарят. «Подарить» (perfective, once): я подарю, я подарил. From «дать» comes the short form «дай!»: «Дай мне торт» (give me the cake). English speakers’ mistake: in English «give MUM a gift» has the recipient with no ending, so they put it in the accusative, like a direct object: «Я дарю маму подарок» ✗ (маму = acc.). But the recipient is in the dative: «Я дарю МАМЕ подарок» ✓. Ask: to whom? → dative, what? → accusative.

Examples

  • Я дарю маме цветы.I give mum flowers.
  • Он подарил другу книгу.He gave his friend a book.
  • Что ты подаришь брату?What will you give your brother?
  • Мы дарим детям подарки.We give the children presents.
  • Дай мне торт, пожалуйста.Give me the cake, please.

Немой «д» в «праздник» и сочетание «жд»— The silent «д» in «праздник» and the cluster «жд»

Some festive words have letters that «hide» or blend. In «праздник» the letter «д» is not pronounced: say «PRÁZ-nik». This is like the silent consonants in «сердце» (SÉR-tse, heart), «солнце» (SÓN-tse, sun), «здравствуйте» (zdrás-tvuy-te, hello) — Russians sometimes simplify hard consonant clusters. But in «рождение» («день рождения», birthday) the cluster «жд» IS fully pronounced, as two sounds «zh-d»: razh-DÉ-ni-ye. In «подарок» the stress is in the middle (pa-DÁ-rak), and the first «о» sounds like «а» (akanye, chapter 42). Read «праздник» without «д», but «рождение» with «жд».
