Almost every German town has a market square in the middle of the old town. Around it stand the town hall, often a church, and cafés with tables outside. Once or twice a week the square becomes the weekly market: stalls with fruit, vegetables, flowers and bread. The market square is the meeting point: here you arrange to meet („let’s meet at the market square“), children play by the fountain, and in December the Christmas market stands here. It is not just a passage but the town’s living room under the open sky. If you get lost, ask for the market square or the town hall: from there you find everything.
步行穿过城市
In the big cities you take the underground, the city train, the bus or the tram. But the old town is best explored on foot: narrow lanes, small shops, a bakery on every corner. Many centres are pedestrian zones, with no cars at all. So you often hear „it’s very close, five minutes on foot“. The bicycle is also very popular: many towns have wide bike paths, and people ride to work and to the market. Punctuality counts: buses and trains usually come exactly on schedule.
先说「Guten Tag」
In Germany politeness counts, and it all starts with a greeting. When entering a shop, a bakery or a waiting room, you say „Guten Tag“ (in the south also „Grüß Gott“), BEFORE you ask anything. When leaving you say „Danke, auf Wiedersehen, schönen Tag noch“. To request something, you add „bitte“ and choose the polite subjunctive: „Ich hätte gern…“, „Könnten Sie…?“. With strangers and older people you use „Sie“, not „du“. These little words — Guten Tag, danke, bitte — cost nothing and open every door.
