Korean · TOPIK Band 1 · Chapter 33
어떻게 가요?How do you get there?
Talking about transport and getting around. Vocabulary: 버스, 지하철, 택시, 자전거, 기차, 비행기, 타다, 내리다, 걸어서, 역, 표. Key grammar: the MEANS you travel by is marked by adding "(으)로" to the noun — 버스로 가요 (I go by bus), 지하철로 가요 (by subway), 택시로 가요 (by taxi). Use "-로" after no final consonant or after ㄹ, "-으로" after another consonant. Walking is "걸어서 가요" (I go on foot). "타다" (to ride) takes 을/를: 버스를 타요, 지하철을 타요. English speakers, like "take the bus", attach the vehicle as the object of 가다: "버스를 가요" ✗ → "버스로 가요" ✓. Hangul corner: the sound of "(으)로" and liaison — 지하철로, 걸어서 [거러서].

"(으)로" of means: 버스로 가요
Explanation
In ch25, "(으)로" showed direction ("왼쪽으로", to the left). This time the same "(으)로" shows the means ("riding what"): noun + "(으)로" = "by that / riding that". Use "-로" after no final consonant or after a ㄹ, "-으로" after another consonant: 버스 → 버스로, 택시 → 택시로, 지하철 → 지하철로 (ㄹ final), 자전거 → 자전거로, 기차 → 기차로. "버스로 학교에 가요" (I go to school by bus), "지하철로 회사에 가요" (I go to work by subway). Walking is "걸어서 가요". Note: "타다" (to board) takes 을/를 — "버스를 타요", "지하철을 타요". English speakers translate "take the bus" literally and make the vehicle the object of "가다": "버스를 가요" ✗. To say the means with "가다", use "(으)로": "버스로 가요" ✓.
Examples
- 저는 버스로 학교에 가요.I go to school by bus.
- 지하철로 회사에 가요.I go to work by subway.
- 역에서 지하철을 타요.I take the subway at the station.
- 집이 가까워요. 그래서 걸어서 가요.My home is near. So I go on foot.
