Thai · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 34
เมื่อวานทำอะไรWhat did you do yesterday?
Past vocabulary: เมื่อวาน, เมื่อวานซืน, อาทิตย์ที่แล้ว, เดือนที่แล้ว, ปีที่แล้ว, เมื่อเช้า, เมื่อกี้, แล้ว, เพิ่ง, เสร็จ. Key grammar: Thai verbs do not change form. To say something is "already done", put "แล้ว" at the END of the sentence: "ผมกินข้าวแล้ว" (I have eaten), "เธอไปทำงานแล้ว" (she has gone to work). A past-time word (เมื่อวาน) already signals the past on its own. "เพิ่ง" (just) goes BEFORE the verb: "ผมเพิ่งกลับบ้าน" (I just got home). English speakers put "already" in the middle, so they tend to say "ผมแล้วกินข้าว" ✗ → "ผมกินข้าวแล้ว" ✓. Tone corner: แล้ว (high), เพิ่ง (falling), เสร็จ (low).

"แล้ว" at the end marks a completed action
Explanation
Thai verbs do not change form for tense. To say an action is "already done" or has happened, put "แล้ว" at the END of the sentence: "ผมกินข้าวแล้ว" (I have eaten), "เธอไปทำงานแล้ว" (she has gone to work), "เราดูหนังเรื่องนั้นแล้ว" (we have seen that film). If a past-time word like "เมื่อวาน" (yesterday) is already there, the past is clear at once: "เมื่อวานผมไปตลาด" (yesterday I went to the market). Another useful word is "เพิ่ง" (just) — place it BEFORE the verb: "ผมเพิ่งกินข้าว" (I just ate). English speakers are used to "already" in the middle (I already ate), so they tend to put "แล้ว" before the verb: "ผมแล้วกินข้าว" ✗ → "ผมกินข้าวแล้ว" ✓. Remember: "แล้ว" is always at the END; "เพิ่ง" goes BEFORE the verb.
Examples
- ผมกินข้าวแล้วI have eaten already.
- เธอไปทำงานแล้วShe has gone to work.
- เมื่อวานเราดูหนังด้วยกันYesterday we watched a movie together.
- ผมเพิ่งกลับบ้านเมื่อกี้I just got home a moment ago.
