Thai · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 43
คุณเคยไปญี่ปุ่นไหมHave you ever been to Japan?
We talk about travel and experiences. Vocabulary: gaan-doen-thaang, tàaŋ-prà-thêet, chaai-hàat, khrʉ̂aŋ-bin, nǎŋ-sʉ̌ʉ-doen-thaaŋ, krà-pǎo-doen-thaaŋ, khɔ̌ɔŋ-fàak, roong-raem, kɔ̀, phák, prà-sòp-kaan, thîao. Key grammar: "เคย + verb" to talk about a life experience (whether you have ever done something): "ผมเคยไปญี่ปุ่น" = at some point in my life I have been to Japan. Question: "เคย...ไหม". Negative: "ไม่เคย + verb" (have never). In ch34 we learned "แล้ว" (already done): "ไปแล้ว" = have gone (one specific time), while "เคยไป" = have (ever) gone (a lifetime experience). Note: English speakers thinking of "have you ever been" often say "ไปแล้วหรือยัง" (have you gone yet, today?) → to ask about a lifetime experience, use "เคยไปไหม" ✓. Tone corner: "เคย" (khəəi) and "แล้ว" (lɛ́ɛw).

Experience: "เคย + verb"
Explanation
In ch34 we learned "แล้ว" at the end of a sentence to say something is already done: "ผมไปเชียงใหม่แล้ว" (I went to Chiang Mai — one specific time). To talk about a life experience — having done something at least once — put "เคย" BEFORE the verb: "เคย + verb". "ผมเคยไปญี่ปุ่น" = at some point in my life I have been to Japan. The question uses "ไหม" at the end: "คุณเคยขึ้นเครื่องบินไหม" (have you ever?). The negative is "ไม่เคย + verb" = have never: "ผมไม่เคยไปต่างประเทศ". The difference: "ไปแล้ว" states one specific time; "เคยไป" states whether you have that experience in life. Note: English speakers often use "แล้ว" for a lifetime experience, so they ask "ไปแล้วหรือยัง" (have you gone yet, today?). To ask about a lifetime experience, use "เคย": "คุณเคยไปไหม" ✓.
Examples
- ผมเคยไปญี่ปุ่นI have been to Japan.
- คุณเคยขึ้นเครื่องบินไหมHave you ever been on a plane?
- ผมเคยพักที่โรงแรมนั้นI have stayed at that hotel.
- เราไม่เคยไปต่างประเทศWe have never been abroad.
- เธอเคยเที่ยวเกาะภูเก็ตShe has visited Phuket island.
