Рынок, магазин и торг Le marché, le magasin et le marchandage
En Russie, il y a deux lieux d'achat très différents : le marché, où les prix sont « vivants » et où l'on peut parfois marchander, et le magasin ou le supermarché, où le prix est sur l'étiquette et ne change pas. Savoir où l'on est, c'est savoir s'il faut marchander ou simplement payer.
Le marché
At the market (especially a food or clothing market) sellers stand behind stalls of vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, clothes. You can taste a lot — the seller will cut you a slice of cheese or hand you a berry. The price is often not on a label but "in the seller's head", so ask: "Сколько стоит?". Market sellers are often the same people year after year, and they value regular customers. The atmosphere is lively and human, quite unlike a quiet supermarket.
Le marchandage
You can bargain in Russia, but more carefully than in Eastern bazaars. At the market it is fine to ask politely: "Можно дешевле?" (can it be cheaper?) or "Сделайте скидку, пожалуйста" (give me a discount, please). The seller may come down a little, especially if you take a lot or buy toward evening. But in a shop or supermarket you don't bargain — the price on the label is final. A smile and a calm tone help: haggling in Russia is a short polite exchange, not an argument. And remember: for a bunch of herbs or a trifle, bargaining is not the done thing.
Magasin et supermarché
In a shop and a supermarket it is the opposite: every item has a price tag, the price is fixed, there is no haggling. You take the item, go to the checkout (касса) and pay in cash or by card. Big chain supermarkets have discounts and loyalty-card offers — written on the price tag. Many families use both: the market for fresh vegetables, herbs and fish, the supermarket for everything else. Knowing where to bargain and where to just pay is a small but useful skill.
En résumé : au marché, demande « Сколько стоит? » et marchande poliment si tu veux ; au magasin ou au supermarché, prends l'article et paie à la caisse. Les deux font partie de la vie russe — et un petit marchandage bref et amical au marché, avec un sourire, peut être le début d'une petite amitié avec le vendeur.
