Ma routineMy routine

Routine vocabulary: se réveiller, se lever, se doucher, se brosser les dents, dormir, toujours, souvent, parfois, rarement, ne… jamais. Key grammar: frequency adverbs go AFTER the conjugated verb, not between the subject and the verb as in English: « Je me lève toujours tôt » (I always get up early), « Il se douche souvent le matin » (he often showers in the morning). « ne… jamais » wraps the verb: « Je ne dors jamais tard » (I never sleep late). English puts the adverb before the verb (« I always get up »), so the English speaker says « Je toujours me lève » ✗; in French it is « Je me lève toujours » ✓. Sound corner: silent final consonants (toujours, jamais) and « ou » = « oo ».

Frequency adverbs: after the verb

Explanation

To say how often you do something, use the adverbs: toujours (always), souvent (often), parfois (sometimes), rarement (rarely). In French they go AFTER the conjugated verb, never between the subject and the verb: « Je me lève toujours tôt » (I always get up early), « Il se douche souvent le matin » (he often showers in the morning), « Je regarde parfois la télé » (I sometimes watch TV). With a pronominal verb (ch18), the adverb comes after the verb, not before the pronoun: « Je me réveille toujours à six heures » (I always wake up at six). For « never », use « ne… jamais », which wraps the verb: « ne » before, « jamais » after — « Je ne dors jamais tard » (I never sleep late). The classic mistake comes from English, which sticks the adverb between the subject and the verb (« I always get up early »). The English speaker then says « Je toujours me lève tôt » ✗. In French the adverb goes after the verb: « Je me lève toujours tôt » ✓.

Examples

  • Je me lève toujours à sept heures.I always get up at seven.
  • Il se douche souvent le matin. He often showers in the morning.
  • Je regarde parfois la télé le soir.I sometimes watch TV in the evening.
  • Je ne dors jamais tard en semaine.I never sleep late during the week.
