Des animaux et des oiseauxAnimals and birds
Nature and animals. Vocabulary: l'animal, le chien, le chat, l'oiseau, l'arbre, la fleur, la rivière, la montagne, la mer, la forêt. Key point: the IRREGULAR PLURAL. In chapter 12 you learned the regular plural (un chat → des chats, with a silent -s). But some nouns do NOT take a simple -s. RULE 1: nouns ending in -al make -aux — un animal → des animaux, un cheval → des chevaux, un journal → des journaux. RULE 2: nouns ending in -eau, -au, -eu add an -x (not an -s) — un oiseau → des oiseaux, un bateau → des bateaux, un château → des châteaux, un jeu → des jeux. Like the -s, this final -x is SILENT. You already said « les animaux » in chapter 27: here is the rule behind it. The classic English-speaker mistake, adding -s to everything: « des animals » ✗, « des oiseaus » ✗. We say « des animaux » ✓, « des oiseaux » ✓.

The irregular plural: -al → -aux, -eau → -eaux
Explanation
In chapter 12, the rule was simple: you add an -s (chat → chats), and it is mainly the articles (le/la → les, un/une → des) that mark the plural out loud. But two families of nouns form their plural differently. FAMILY 1 — nouns in -AL make -AUX: un animal → des animaux, un cheval → des chevaux, un journal → des journaux, un hôpital → des hôpitaux. FAMILY 2 — nouns in -EAU, -AU and -EU add an -X (not an -s): un oiseau → des oiseaux, un bateau → des bateaux, un château → des châteaux, un jeu → des jeux, un cheveu → des cheveux. Good news for the ear: this final -x is SILENT, just like the -s. So « un bateau » and « des bateaux » sound the same (« ba-TO ») — it is the article (un / des) that tells you whether there is one or several. Still, careful: for -al nouns, the sound changes in the plural: « un animal » = « a-ni-MAL », but « des animaux » = « a-ni-MO ». You already used « les animaux » in chapter 27 (« j'aime les animaux »): here at last is the rule. The classic English-speaker MISTAKE, putting -s everywhere: « des animals » ✗, « des chevals » ✗, « des oiseaus » ✗. We say « des animaux » ✓, « des chevaux » ✓, « des oiseaux » ✓. Little tip: if the word ends in -al, think « -aux »; if it ends in -eau/-au/-eu, just add an -x.
