생각을 이어요: A1의 끝Linking ideas: the end of A1
A1 review and wrap-up. Key grammar: connectors — words that link short sentences smoothly. Sentence-linking conjunctive adverbs: "그리고" (addition), "하지만·그렇지만" (contrast), "그래서" (result), "왜냐하면" (reason). And "-지만" (= but), which attaches directly to verbs and adjectives: "좋지만" (it's good but), "어렵지만" (it's hard but). Story order: "먼저 … 그다음에 … 마지막으로" (first … then … finally). Without them, sentences are choppy ("저는 피곤해요. 잘 거예요.", I'm tired. I'll sleep.); with them, they flow ("저는 피곤해요. 그래서 잘 거예요.", I'm tired. So I'll sleep.). The most important trap, especially for English speakers: confusing reason and result. "왜냐하면" introduces the reason, "그래서" introduces the result. "많이 공부했어요. 그래서 시험에 합격했어요" (result) ✓; "시험에 합격했어요. 왜냐하면 많이 공부했거든요" (reason) ✓. Swapping them reverses the meaning. This chapter is the last of A1: here you link greetings, self-introduction, present and past, requests, and talk about family, food, travel and parties. Congratulations! Hangul corner: "하지만" [하지만] and the ㅎ+ㅈ sound in "-지만" ("좋지만" [조치만], "그렇지만" [그러치만]).

Connectors: 그리고, 하지만, 그래서, -지만
Explanation
You already know a lot now. What remains is linking your ideas. Connectors make speech natural. Sentence-linking conjunctive adverbs (they come at the front of a sentence): (1) 그리고 — addition: "밥을 먹었어요. 그리고 커피를 마셨어요." (I ate. And I drank coffee.) (2) 하지만·그렇지만 — contrast: "피곤했어요. 하지만 파티에 갔어요." (I was tired. But I went to the party.) (3) 그래서 — result: "비가 왔어요. 그래서 집에 있었어요." (It rained. So I stayed home.) (4) 왜냐하면 — reason: "집에 있었어요. 왜냐하면 비가 왔거든요." (I stayed home. Because it rained.) To join two clauses inside one sentence, attach "-지만" (= but) directly to a verb/adjective: "이 책은 좋지만 비싸요" (좋다 + 지만, this book is good but expensive), "한국어는 어렵지만 재미있어요" (어렵다 + 지만, Korean is hard but fun). Story order: "먼저 … 그다음에 … 마지막으로" (first … then … finally). The biggest trap, especially for English speakers: confusing reason and result. Just as English "because" and "so" link in opposite directions, Korean does too. "왜냐하면" looks at the reason that follows, "그래서" shows the result of what came before. "많이 공부했어요. 그래서 시험에 합격했어요" (cause = studying, result = passing) ✓; "시험에 합격했어요. 왜냐하면 많이 공부했거든요" (reason = studying) ✓. If you swap them, the meaning goes strange. Summary: reason is "왜냐하면/-아서", result is "그래서". With this you finish A1 — now you can tell linked stories, not just short sentences. Congratulations on getting this far!
