Giving and receiving: 주다 / 받다, and the honorific 드리다
Explanation
In Korean, three verbs matter for giving and receiving. "주다" (= to give): give something to someone. "받다" (= to receive): receive something from someone. "드리다" (= to give, honorific): give something to an elder. The recipient is marked with the particles from chapter 40: "에게" or "한테" for friends and younger people (친구에게, 동생한테), and the honorific particle "께" for elders (할머니께, 선생님께). Key: when you give to an elder, you do not use "주다" as-is; you switch to the honorific "드리다". So "께" and "드리다" go together. Examples: "친구에게 선물을 줘요" (친구에게 → 주다), "동생한테 케이크를 줬어요" (동생한테 → 주다), "선물을 받았어요" (받다), "할머니께 선물을 드려요" (할머니께 → 드리다, honorific), "선생님께 편지를 드렸어요" (I gave the teacher a letter). Common English-speaker mistake: English has only one "give" and no honorific, so people use "주다 + 에게" even for an elder and say "할머니에게 선물을 줬어요" ✗. For an elder, you must use "께 + 드리다": "할머니께 선물을 드렸어요" ✓. Summary: friend/younger = 에게·한테 + 주다; elder = 께 + 드리다; for receiving, anyone = "받다".
