Portuguese · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 41
Um gatinho fofoA cute little cat
Nature and animals. Vocabulary: o animal, o cachorro, o gato, o pássaro, a árvore, a flor, o rio, a montanha, o mar, a floresta. Key point: the DIMINUTIVE -inho/-inha conveys smallness AND affection — very Brazilian. Rule: swap the final vowel for -inho/-inha (gato → gatinho, casa → casinha); but if the word ends in a stressed vowel, in -m, -r or a nasal sound, use -zinho/-zinha (café → cafezinho, cão → cãozinho, flor → florzinha). "Um passarinho" is not just "a small bird": it is a cute, dear little bird. It also softens requests: "só um minutinho" (just a little minute). English speakers, since English has no such suffix, say "um gato pequeno" for what a native would call "gatinho", or form it wrong ("gato-inho" ✗) → "gatinho" ✓.

Um gato pequeno / um gatinho
- BiaOlha o que apareceu no jardim, Mike!Look what showed up in the garden, Mike!
- MikeQue fofo! É um gato pequeno. How cute! It is a small cat. (correct, but a native would feel the affection with a diminutive: "um gatinho")
- BiaEstá certo, mas aqui a gente diz "um gatinho". O -inho não é só "pequeno" — é carinho. That is right, but here we say "um gatinho". The -inho is not just "small" — it is affection.
- MikeAh, entendi! Então... um gato-inho?Ah, I get it! So... um gato-inho? (wrong: you drop the final vowel — "gatinho", not "gato-inho")
- BiaQuase! Tira o "o" do fim e junta: ga-ti-nho. E o passarinho ali na árvore também é um "-inho".Almost! Drop the "o" at the end and join: ga-ti-nho. And that little bird in the tree is also an "-inho".
- MikeQue gatinho e que passarinho! Agora sim, com carinho. What a little cat and what a little bird! Now yes, with affection.

The diminutive: -inho / -inha (and -zinho / -zinha)
Explanation
The diminutive is one of the most Brazilian traits of Portuguese. It does not only say something is small — it says you feel affection for it. "Um gatinho" is not just a small cat: it is a dear, cute cat. FORM 1 (the most common): drop the final vowel and add -inho (masculine) or -inha (feminine) — gato → gatinho (little cat), casa → casinha (little house), pouco → pouquinho (a tiny bit). FORM 2 (-zinho / -zinha): used when the word ends in a stressed vowel, in -m, -r, or a nasal sound (-ão, -ãe) — café → cafezinho (little coffee), cão → cãozinho (little dog), flor → florzinha (little flower), animal → animalzinho, mãe → mãezinha, pão → pãozinho (bread roll). Note that -zinho keeps the whole word and just adds the suffix. USES: (1) size + affection: "que passarinho lindo!" (what a lovely little bird!); (2) softening a request or a duration: "só um minutinho" (just a little minute), "um cafezinho?" (a little coffee?); (3) warmth with people: "meu amorzinho" (my little love), "a vovozinha" (dear granny). Typical English-speaker mistake: since English has no such suffix, the speaker says "um gato pequeno" for what a native would call "gatinho", losing the affection, or tries to glue the wrong suffix ("gato-inho" ✗). The right form is "gatinho" ✓; and after a stressed vowel or nasal sound, "cãozinho" ✓, not "cãoinho" ✗.
