Polite requests: "Cho tôi… ạ"
Explanation
When buying something or asking someone, the polite way is "Cho tôi + N": "Cho tôi một cà phê" (a coffee, please), "Cho tôi cái bản đồ này" (this map, please). "Cho" means "give / for", so "Cho tôi…" = "please give me / may I have". To be even politer, add the respectful particle "ạ" at the END: "Cho tôi hai vé ạ" (two tickets, please). "Làm ơn" (please) goes at the START: "Làm ơn cho tôi bản đồ ạ". With a stranger, an older person or a shopkeeper, "Cho tôi… ạ" sounds politer and warmer than "Tôi muốn…" (chapter 21), because "Tôi muốn…" can sound a bit direct and demanding. Typical mistake: "ạ" ALWAYS comes last; English speakers tend to put it in the middle like the English "please": "Cho tôi ạ hai vé" ✗ → "Cho tôi hai vé ạ" ✓.

A Vietnamese city lives on the street. Motorbikes are everywhere, cafés and food stalls spill onto the pavement, and people bargain, order food and ask for directions all day long. Knowing how to say "Cho tôi… ạ" (…, please) and "Bao nhiêu tiền?" (how much?) already lets you join that rhythm of life.
Motorbikes and the streets
The main way to get around the city is the motorbike. At rush hour, the whole flow of bikes moves like a river. Crossing the road is an art: you step steadily, slowly and surely, and let the bikes weave around you. Many people also take the bus, and ride-hailing apps for motorbikes or taxis are very popular. The pavement is both a parking spot and an eatery, so pedestrians often step down into the road a little.
Eateries and bargaining
Eating in Vietnam often happens out on the street, on low plastic stools. You order, eat quickly, then "tính tiền" (pay the bill) when you are done. In markets and small shops, bargaining is normal: ask "Bao nhiêu tiền?" (how much?), then smile and offer a slightly lower price. In supermarkets and cafés the prices are fixed, with no bargaining. A polite "Cho tôi… ạ" is always met with a smile.
Forms of address and courtesy
In the city, the way you address people shows respect. With a young vendor you say "em"; with someone older, you say "anh", "chị", "cô" or "chú". Add "ạ" at the end of your sentence and a smile, and you will be liked right away. Vietnamese people greatly value those who greet politely, especially towards older people. A gentle "Cảm ơn ạ" (thank you) or "Dạ, vâng" (yes) goes a long way.
A Vietnamese city is noisy, fast and warm. With just three phrases — "Cho tôi… ạ" (…, please), "Bao nhiêu tiền?" (how much?) and "Cảm ơn ạ" (thank you) — you can shop, order coffee and ask for directions with confidence and courtesy.
