날씨가 어때요? How is the weather?

Nalssiga eottaeyo?

Talking about the weather. Words: 날씨 (weather), 덥다 (to be hot), 춥다 (to be cold), 비 (rain), 눈 (snow), 바람 (wind), 맑다 (to be clear/sunny), 흐리다 (to be cloudy), 여름 (summer), 겨울 (winter). Key grammar: weather is said with adjectives — "날씨가 더워요" (it is hot), "날씨가 추워요" (it is cold), "날씨가 맑아요" (it is clear). Rain and snow use "오다" (to come) — "비가 와요" (it rains), "눈이 와요" (it snows), like the verbs from ch18. "덥다, 춥다" are ㅂ-irregular, so they become "더워요, 추워요". English speakers use the copula "이에요/예요 (be)" for weather — "오늘은 비예요" ✗ → "오늘은 비가 와요" ✓, "날씨가 더위예요" ✗ → "날씨가 더워요" ✓. Pronunciation corner: the ㅂ-irregular (덥다 → 더워요).

비예요? 비가 와요?

  1. Jieun 마이클 씨, 오늘 날씨가 어때요? Michael, how is the weather today?
  2. Michael 음… 오늘은 비예요. 그리고 날씨가 더위예요. Um... today it is rain. And the weather is heat. (slip: weather is not the copula 이에요/예요 — use "비가 와요" and "날씨가 더워요")
  3. Jieun 날씨는 "이에요"가 아니에요: 비가 와요, 날씨가 더워요. Weather is not "이에요": 비가 와요, 날씨가 더워요.
  4. Michael 아, 비가 와요. 그리고 날씨가 더워요. Ah, it is raining. And the weather is hot.

여름과 겨울 — Summer and winter

  1. Michael 지은 씨, 한국은 여름에 더워요? Jieun, is Korea hot in summer?
  2. Jieun 네, 여름에 더워요. 그리고 비가 와요. Yes, it is hot in summer. And it rains.
  3. Michael 겨울은 어때요? How about winter?
  4. Jieun 겨울에 추워요. 눈이 와요. In winter it is cold. It snows.
  5. Michael 오늘은 날씨가 맑아요. 좋아요! Today the weather is clear. Nice!

Weather is said with adjectives, not with "이에요/예요". "[weather/season]이/가 + adjective": 날씨가 더워요 (it is hot), 날씨가 추워요 (it is cold), 날씨가 맑아요 (it is sunny), 날씨가 흐려요 (it is cloudy). "덥다, 춥다" are ㅂ-irregular — the final ㅂ becomes "워": 덥다 → 더워요, 춥다 → 추워요. Rain and snow use not an adjective but the verb "오다" (to come → 와요): 비가 와요 (it rains), 눈이 와요 (it snows), 바람이 불어요 (the wind blows, from 불다). Copying English "It is rain / It is hot" as "오늘은 비예요" or "날씨가 더위예요" is wrong — rain is "비가 와요", heat is "날씨가 더워요". With seasons: "여름에 더워요" (it is hot in summer), "겨울에 추워요" (it is cold in winter), like the time "에" from ch17.

  • 오늘 날씨가 더워요. Oneul nalssiga deowoyo. The weather is hot today.
  • 겨울에 눈이 와요. Gyeoure nuni wayo. It snows in winter.
  • 비가 와요. 그리고 바람이 불어요. Biga wayo. Geurigo barami bureoyo. It is raining. And the wind is blowing.
  • 오늘은 날씨가 맑아요. Oneureun nalssiga malgayo. Today the weather is clear.
