Parties and celebrations. Vocabulary: die Party, das Geschenk, der Geburtstag, die Einladung, Weihnachten, geben, bekommen, schenken, feiern, der Kuchen. Key point: the DATIVE pronouns — the „to whom“ of the sentence. With verbs of giving and saying (geben, schenken, schicken, sagen) you ask „wem?“ (to whom?): ich gebe MARIA ein Geschenk → ich gebe IHR ein Geschenk (I give her a gift). The dative pronouns are: mir (to me), dir (to you), IHM (to him), IHR (to her), uns (to us), euch (to you-pl), IHNEN (to them). In chapter 40 you learned the ACCUSATIVE pronouns (mich, dich, ihn, sie — the „whom/what“). Now comes the DATIVE — the recipient. Careful with „ihr“ and „ihm“: „sie“ (accusative, „her“) becomes „ihr“ in the dative; „ihn“ becomes „ihm“. The classic English-speaker MISTAKE: English has only one form („I give HER a gift“), so people use the accusative „sie“ also as the recipient — „Ich gebe sie ein Geschenk“ ✗. The right one is the dative: „Ich gebe ihr ein Geschenk“ ✓.

Dative pronouns: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, ihnen (to whom?)

Explanation

In chapter 40 you learned the ACCUSATIVE pronouns (the „whom/what“: mich, dich, ihn, sie, es, uns, euch, sie). Now comes the DATIVE — the RECIPIENT, the „to whom“. It appears with verbs of giving and saying: geben, schenken, schicken, sagen, zeigen, bringen. The question is „wem?“ (to whom?): ich gebe MARIA ein Geschenk. The dative pronouns are: mir (to me), dir (to you), IHM (to him), IHR (to her), uns (to us), euch (to you-pl), IHNEN (to them), and polite Ihnen. The two most important new ones: „sie“ (accusative, „her/it“) becomes IHR in the dative, and „ihn“ becomes IHM. You already know „mir“ and „dir“ from „weh tun“ (chapter 29) and „mir ist kalt“ (chapter 39). The word order: with „geben“ the dative pronoun usually stands BEFORE the accusative object: „Ich gebe IHR ein Geschenk“ (I give her a gift), „Sie schenkt UNS einen Kuchen“ (She gives us a cake), „Wir schicken IHNEN eine Einladung“ (We send them an invitation). The classic English-speaker MISTAKE: English has only one form for the recipient („I give HER a gift“ — no case, no „to“), so people use the accusative „sie“ also as the recipient: „Ich gebe sie ein Geschenk“ ✗. In German the recipient needs the DATIVE: „Ich gebe ihr ein Geschenk“ ✓. Memory aid: if you can put a „to“ before the person in English (give a gift TO her), it is dative → mir/dir/ihm/ihr/ihnen.
