Rencana dan ajakan Plans and invitations

Planning vocabulary: rencana, akhir pekan, luang, sibuk, bersama, mengajak, akan, ayo, yuk, janjian. Key grammar: talk about the future with "akan + verb" — "saya akan pergi" (I will go) — and invite with "Ayo" or "Yuk" at the FRONT of the sentence — "Ayo makan bersama" (let's eat together). English speakers put "Let's" at the front, but often forget its equivalent and just say "Kita makan" (we eat) — which sounds like a statement, not an invitation. A natural invitation opens with "Ayo/Yuk". Pronunciation corner: the "kh" in "akhir", and the final "k" in "sibuk".

Kita nonton film? Ayo kita nonton film? — Kita nonton film? or Ayo kita nonton film?

  1. Mike Budi, akhir pekan ini kamu luang tidak? Budi, are you free this weekend?
  2. Budi Luang. Kenapa? I'm free. Why?
  3. Mike Kita nonton film. We watch a movie. (slip: to invite, open with "Ayo/Yuk" → "Ayo kita nonton film" / "Yuk, nonton film")
  4. Budi Untuk mengajak, mulai dengan "Ayo" atau "Yuk": "Ayo kita nonton film." To invite, start with "Ayo" or "Yuk": "Ayo kita nonton film."
  5. Mike Oh, ayo kita nonton film! Sabtu malam. Oh, let's watch a movie! Saturday night.

Rencana akhir pekan — Weekend plans

  1. Mike Sari, akhir pekan ini ada rencana? Sari, do you have any plans this weekend?
  2. Sari Sabtu saya sibuk, tapi Minggu saya akan luang. Saturday I'm busy, but Sunday I'll be free.
  3. Mike Kalau begitu, hari Minggu ayo makan bersama. Then let's eat together on Sunday.
  4. Sari Boleh. Sampai Minggu, ya. Okay. See you Sunday.

Two tools for making plans. One, the future: put "akan" before the verb — "saya akan pergi" (I will go), "Akhir pekan ini saya akan ke Bali" (this weekend I will go to Bali). "akan" sits right before the verb and does not change form. Two, the invitation: open the sentence with "Ayo" (or the more casual "Yuk") — "Ayo makan bersama" (let's eat together), "Yuk, nonton film" (let's watch a movie). English speakers put "Let's" at the front, but sometimes forget its equivalent and just say "Kita nonton film" (we watch a movie) — that sentence sounds like a plain statement, not an invitation. A natural invitation opens with "Ayo/Yuk". To accept: "Boleh" (okay) or "Ayo" (let's). To decline politely: "Maaf, saya sibuk" (sorry, I'm busy).

  • Akhir pekan ini saya akan ke Bali. This weekend I will go to Bali.
  • Kamu luang tidak? Ayo makan bersama. Are you free? Let's eat together.
  • Yuk, nonton film! Let's watch a movie!
  • Maaf, hari ini saya sibuk. Sorry, I'm busy today.
