Korean · TOPIK Band 1 · Chapter 30

내일 뭐 할 거예요? What are you going to do tomorrow?

Naeil mwo hal geoyeyo?

Plans and appointments. Words: 계획 (plan), 파티 (party), 저녁 (evening/dinner), 주말 (weekend), 내일 (tomorrow), 밤 (night), 만나다 (to meet), 초대하다 (to invite), 놀다 (to hang out/play), 같이 (together). Key grammar: future plans are said with "verb + -(으)ㄹ 거예요" — 내일 공부할 거예요 (I will study tomorrow), 친구를 만날 거예요 (I will meet a friend). Use "-을 거예요" after a final consonant, "-ㄹ 거예요" after none. Do not leave the verb in the "-아/어요" present form. English speakers say "봐요 거예요" instead of "볼 거예요" ✗ → "볼 거예요" ✓. Invitations use "같이 …-(으)ㄹ까요?" — "같이 저녁 먹을까요?" (shall we have dinner together?). Pronunciation corner: the tensing [께] in "-ㄹ 거예요" (볼 거예요 = [볼 꺼예요]).

봐요 거예요? 볼 거예요?

  1. Jieun 마이클 씨, 내일 뭐 할 거예요? Michael, what are you going to do tomorrow?
  2. Michael 저는 영화를 봐요 거예요. 그리고 친구를 만나요 거예요. I am going to watch a movie. And meet a friend. (slip: the verb must be in the -(으)ㄹ form before 거예요: "볼 거예요", "만날 거예요", not "봐요 거예요")
  3. Jieun 동사를 "-(으)ㄹ"로 바꿔요: 볼 거예요, 만날 거예요. Change the verb to "-(으)ㄹ": 볼 거예요, 만날 거예요.
  4. Michael 아, 내일 영화를 볼 거예요. 그리고 친구를 만날 거예요. Ah, tomorrow I am going to watch a movie. And meet a friend.

초대 — An invitation

  1. Jieun 마이클 씨, 주말에 파티를 할 거예요. Michael, I am going to have a party on the weekend.
  2. Michael 정말요? 몇 시에 할 거예요? Really? What time is it going to be?
  3. Jieun 저녁 일곱 시에 할 거예요. 같이 저녁 먹을까요? It is going to be at seven in the evening. Shall we have dinner together?
  4. Michael 네, 좋아요! 친구를 초대할까요? Yes, great! Shall I invite a friend?
  5. Jieun 네, 같이 놀아요! Yes, let's hang out together!

Future actions (plans) are said with "verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 거예요". Use "-을 거예요" after a final consonant, "-ㄹ 거예요" after none: 먹다 → 먹을 거예요, 가다 → 갈 거예요, 보다 → 볼 거예요, 만나다 → 만날 거예요. "내일 친구를 만날 거예요" (I will meet a friend tomorrow), "주말에 영화를 볼 거예요" (I will watch a movie on the weekend). Important: do not leave the verb in the "-아/어요" present form and add "거예요" — "봐요 거예요" ✗ → "볼 거예요" ✓. To suggest doing something together, use "같이 …-(으)ㄹ까요?": "같이 저녁 먹을까요?" (shall we have dinner together?), "같이 갈까요?" (shall we go together?). The reply is "네, 좋아요!" or "같이 가요."
