J'aime le footballI like football
Talking about free time and saying what you like. Vocabulary: le temps libre, le football, la plage, la musique, danser, nager, lire, aimer, adorer, détester. Key point: when you like something in general, French uses the definite article (le/la/les): « J'aime LE football » (I like football), « J'adore LA musique », « Je déteste LES embouteillages » (I hate traffic jams). Before a verb, you use the bare infinitive, with no « à » or « de »: « J'aime nager » (I like swimming). English speakers forget the article: « J'aime football » ✗ → « J'aime le football » ✓. « adorer » (to love) and « détester » follow the same rule. Aimer + LE/LA + noun, or + infinitive
Explanation
In French, when you like something IN GENERAL, you need the definite article before the noun: « J'aime LE football », « J'aime LA musique », « J'aime LES animaux » (I like animals). You do not say « J'aime football » — English drops the article, but French always keeps it. Before a VERB, on the contrary, you use the infinitive on its own, with no preposition: « J'aime nager », « J'aime lire », « J'adore danser » — no « à » or « de ». Two stronger verbs follow the same rule: « adorer » (to love) and « détester »: « J'adore la plage », « Je déteste les embouteillages ». To ask: « Tu aimes le football ? » (Do you like football?) → « Oui, j'aime bien » (Yes, I do) / « Non, pas trop » (Not really).

Free time in France often revolves around three simple pleasures: sitting on a café terrace, following football, and having the apéro with friends. Knowing how to talk about them opens almost any conversation.
The café terrace
In France, coffee is not just a drink, it is a place. You settle on a terrace for a « petit café » (an espresso), you watch people go by, and no one rushes you — you can stay an hour with a single cup. Ordering is simple: « Un café, s'il vous plaît » brings you an espresso; for a morning coffee with milk, ask for « un crème ». The terrace is the town's living room: you read there, you chat, you put the world to rights.
Football and cycling
Sport brings the French together. Football is king: « Les Bleus » (the national team) thrill the whole country during the World Cup, and many « support » a club — PSG, OM, OL. But there is also cycling: every summer, « le Tour de France » crosses the country for three weeks, and people picnic by the roadside to watch the riders go by. An easy question to break the ice: « Tu as regardé le match hier ? » (Did you watch the match yesterday?).
The apéro among friends
« L'apéro » (the apéritif) is the favourite ritual for getting together. At the end of the day, people gather at someone's place or on a terrace around a drink and little things to nibble: olives, crisps, saucisson, cheese. The invitation is relaxed — « Tu viens prendre l'apéro ? » (Are you coming for the apéro?) — and it is more an occasion to talk than to eat. An apéro can drag on and turn into an « apéro dînatoire » (an apéro that replaces dinner). What matters is the time together, without rushing.
In short: to join a group in France, settle on a terrace, talk about the latest match and accept the invitation to the apéro. Free time here is, almost always, time with others.
