French · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 28

Quel temps fait-il ?What's the weather like?

Talking about the weather and the seasons. Vocabulary: le temps, le soleil, la pluie, le vent, chaud, froid, nuageux, pleuvoir, l'été, l'hiver. Key point: for the weather, French says « il fait » + adjective — « Il fait chaud » (It is hot), « Il fait froid », « Il fait beau » (nice weather), « Il fait mauvais » (bad weather). For wind and sun, you say « il y a »: « Il y a du vent » (It is windy), « Il y a du soleil ». And « il pleut » (it rains), « il neige » (it snows). You never use « être »: English speakers say « il est chaud » or « c'est chaud » ✗ (from English « it is hot ») → « il fait chaud » ✓. The seasons: le printemps, l'été, l'automne, l'hiver — « En été, il fait chaud » (In summer it is hot).

The weather: « il fait » / « il y a » (never « être »)

Explanation

For the weather, French uses the impersonal verb « il fait » (from faire) + adjective: « Il fait chaud », « Il fait froid », « Il fait beau », « Il fait mauvais ». For what you can count or measure, you use « il y a » + du/de la/des: « Il y a du soleil », « Il y a du vent », « Il y a des nuages » (there are clouds). Two special verbs say rain and snow: « il pleut », « il neige ». What you NEVER use is « être »: English speakers translate « it is hot » word for word and say « il est chaud » or « c'est chaud » ✗; the correct form is « il fait chaud » ✓. (« il est chaud » would mean an object is hot.) Seasons take « en » (except spring): « en été », « en automne », « en hiver », but « au printemps ». To ask: « Quel temps fait-il ? » (What is the weather like?) or « Il fait quel temps ? ».

Examples

  • Aujourd'hui il fait chaud et il y a du soleil.Today it is hot and sunny.
  • Il pleut, prends ton parapluie. It is raining, take your umbrella.
  • En hiver il fait froid et il y a du vent.In winter it is cold and windy.
  • Quel temps fait-il chez toi ? — Il fait mauvais, il y a des nuages. What is the weather like at your place? — It is bad, there are clouds.
