French · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 34
Hier, j'ai fait çaYesterday, I did that
The first past tense: the passé composé. Vocabulary: hier, le week-end dernier, déjà, manger, regarder, visiter, acheter, écouter, jouer, rencontrer. Key grammar: for a finished action, take « avoir » IN THE PRESENT + the past participle. For -er verbs, the participle ends in -é: manger → mangé, regarder → regardé. « J'ai mangé » (I ate), « tu as regardé », « il a visité », « nous avons acheté », « ils ont écouté ». English says « I ate / I have eaten » as a single word, so the English speaker drops the auxiliary: « je mangé » ✗ → « j'ai mangé » ✓. You always need both pieces: avoir + participle. Sound corner: the participle « -é » (« mangé », « acheté ») is said « ay ».

The passé composé: avoir + participle (-é)
Explanation
Until now everything was in the present. To tell a FINISHED action, French uses the passé composé, built in TWO pieces: « avoir » in the present (j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont) + the past participle of the verb. For all -er verbs the participle is regular: replace -er with -é. manger → mangé, regarder → regardé, visiter → visité, acheter → acheté, écouter → écouté. So: « J'ai mangé une pizza » (I ate a pizza), « Tu as regardé un film », « Elle a visité Paris », « Nous avons acheté du pain », « Ils ont écouté la radio ». Past-time words help: hier, le week-end dernier, déjà. The English speaker's classic mistake: in English « I ate / I watched » is ONE word, so you drop the auxiliary and say « je mangé », « hier je regardé ». But without « avoir » the sentence does not exist in French. You always need both pieces: « Hier j'ai mangé » ✓, never « Hier je mangé » ✗. And « j' » replaces « je » before a vowel: je + ai = j'ai.
Examples
- Hier, j'ai mangé au restaurant.Yesterday I ate at the restaurant.
- Tu as regardé un film hier soir ?Did you watch a film last night?
- Le week-end dernier, elle a visité Paris.Last weekend she visited Paris.
- Nous avons déjà acheté le pain.We have already bought the bread.
