French · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 33

Comment tu y vas ?How do you get there?

Transport vocabulary: le bus, le train, la voiture, le vélo, la moto, l'avion, le métro, à pied, en, la gare. Key grammar: for a vehicle you get INSIDE, say « en » + the means, with no article: « en bus », « en train », « en voiture », « en métro », « en avion ». For something you straddle or for walking, say « à »: « à pied », « à vélo », « à moto ». The pattern is aller + à/au + place + en/à + means: « Je vais au travail en bus » (I go to work by bus). English says « by bus »; the English speaker looks for « by » and takes « par » — but « par » marks the route or agent (« passer PAR Lyon » = to go via Lyon), not the means: « Je vais par bus » ✗ → « Je vais en bus » ✓. Sound corner: « en », « train » (nasal), « voiture ».

Going « en » bus: the means of transport

Explanation

To say by what means you travel, French distinguishes two prepositions. For a closed vehicle you get INSIDE, use « en » followed by the means, with no article: « en bus », « en train », « en voiture », « en métro », « en avion », « en bateau ». For something you straddle (two-wheelers) or for walking, use « à »: « à pied », « à vélo », « à moto », « à cheval ». The full pattern: aller + à/au + the place + en/à + the means: « Je vais au travail en bus », « Elle rentre en train », « Je vais à l'école à vélo ». The classic mistake: in English you say « by bus », so the English speaker looks for a « by » and chooses « par ». But « par » in French marks the route you follow or the agent doing the action: « Je passe PAR Lyon » (I go via Lyon), « fait PAR un artiste » (made by an artist). It is never the vehicle you travel in. So « Je vais par bus » ✗ is wrong; the correct form is « Je vais en bus » ✓ (or « à vélo » for a two-wheeler).

Examples

  • Je vais au travail en bus.I go to work by bus.
  • Elle rentre en train. She goes home by train.
  • Nous allons au marché en voiture. We go to the market by car.
  • L'école est près, alors je vais à vélo.The school is near, so I go by bike.
